Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
WHEREAS, this year nearly 20,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian
cancer - the deadliest of all female reproductive system
cancers, and;
WHEREAS, approximately 1.1 percent of women will be diagnosed with
ovarian cancer at some point during their lifetime, and;
WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths of
women in the United States, and;
WHEREAS, although the five-year survival rate for Stage I ovarian cancer is
over 90 percent, only 15 percent of ovarian cancers are
diagnosed at this early stage, and the five-year survival rate for
late-stage ovarian cancer is below 30 percent;
WHEREAS, despite remarkable scientific breakthroughs, no reliable method
for asymptomatic screening and detection exists. Even for
patients who receive a timely diagnosis, the flood of medical
information can be overwhelming, and the cost of life-saving
care can be financially crippling, and;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Walter "Chip" Wilson, by virtue of the authority vested in
me as Mayor of the City of Apache Junction,Arizona, do hereby proclaim the month
of September as
OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
