City of Apache Junction,Arizona Page 1 Printed on 8/15/2024 CityApacheof Junction ' . a 14,_, 300 East Superstition Boulevard •Apache Junction,Arizona 85119 •www.ajcity.net August 19, 2024 MEMORANDUM TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL THROUGH: BRYANT POWELL, CITY MANAGER FROM: JENNIFER PENA, CITY CLERK SUBJECT: RESOLUTION NO. 24-29, CANVASS OF VOTES FOR JULY 30, 2024, PRIMARY ELECTION Arizona Revised Statutes §16-642 (A) requires that the city council convene not less than six (6) not more than twenty (20) days following an election for purposes of canvassing the returns of the election. Arizona Revised Statutes §16-646 specifies the information requirements of the canvass. When the results of the canvass are determined, the City Clerk must enter upon the records a statement known as the official canvass which must show: ■ The number of ballots cast in each precinct and in the county. ■ The number of ballots rejected in each and in the county. ■ The titles of the offices voted for and the names of the person, together with the party designation, if any, of each person voted for to fill the offices. ■ The number of votes by precincts and county received by each candidate. ■ For each candidate race in each political subdivision prescribed by section A.R.S. §16-204.01, the number of ballots cast and the number of active registered voters in each political subdivision, and portion of a political subdivision for which a candidate may be elected. ■ The numbers and a brief title of each proposed constitutional amendment and each initiated or referred measure voted on. ■ The number of votes by precincts and county for and against such proposed amendment or measure. As of the last day to register to vote for the Primary Election, Apache Junction had 27,279 active registered voters. Pinal County represented 27,072 and Maricopa represented 207 voters. The number of ballots cast in the Primary Election by residents of the City of Apache Junction in Pinal County was 6780 and 91 in Maricopa County for a total of 6871 ballots cast. Voter turnout was 25%. Even though the law does not specify that the canvass must be done as a resolution, most Arizona cities and towns use a resolution format to preserve the record. Apache Junction is located in both Maricopa and Pinal Counties, the information needed for the canvass has to be collected from both jurisdictions. Certificates of election will be provided to the successful candidates when they take office on January 7, 2025. The following City Council candidates received the required votes to be elected: Peter Heck Bambi Johnson Tess Nesser The following Mayoral candidate received the required votes to be elected: Chip Wilson All successful candidates will be sworn in at a Ceremonial meeting to seat the newly elected January 7, 2025. RESOLUTION NO. 24-29 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF APACHE JUNCTION, FINAL AND MARICOPA COUNTIES, ARIZONA, DECLARING AND ADOPTING THE RESULTS OF THE PRIMARY ELECTION HELD ON JULY 30, 2024 . WHEREAS, the City of Apache Junction, which is located in Pinal and Maricopa Counties, Arizona, did hold a primary election on the 3 OTH day of July 2024, for voter selection of a mayor and three councilmembers; and WHEREAS, A.R. S . § 16-642 requires a city that held an election to meet and canvas the election results not less than six days nor more than twenty days following the election; and WHEREAS, the election returns have been certified by both counties and are now available for the canvass . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the mayor and council of the City of Apache Junction, Pinal and Maricopa Counties, Arizona, as follows : SECTION 1 . That the total number of ballots cast at said primary election, as shown by the attached reports from Pinal and Maricopa Counties, marked as Exhibit A was 6871 . SECTION 2 . That the total number of ballots rejected, at said primary election, was 341 . SECTION 3 .
