HomeMy WebLinkAbout1981 02.23 PRC MinutesCITY OF APACHE JUNCTION PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION 1001 North Idaho Road Apache Junction, Arizona REGULAR MEETING February 23, 1981 A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission was held on February 23, 1981 at 7:00 P.M. at the Apache Junction City Hall Complex pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. PRESENT Lois Broman Phil Richardson DeDe Scheff Raymond Foisy Ronald Staples Harvey Long Staff present: Jeff Bell, Community Service Coordinator Others present: Pat Smith Greg Smith Tammy Kirkman CALL TO ORDER: ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES: COORDINATOR COMMENTS: ABSENT Gerald Bright Margaret Carlin Thomas Farrell Lois Broman, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M., and the Pledge of Allegiance followed. A motion was made by Ron Staples to accept the agenda, and seconded by Harvey Long.Motion carries unanimously. A motion was made by Harvey Long to accept as presented the minutes of the January 26 regular meeting and the February 9 special meeting. Raymond Foisy seconded bhe motion which passed unanimously. Jeff Bell reported President Regean had cut off funds for all recreation pro- jects.Discussion followed regarding the swimming pool drive.Mr. Foisy felt he was getting a negative response to dona- tions for a pool.Greg Smith responded to Mr. Foisy's comments.He stated kids need a pool and that parents are behind the drive.He felt we should not let a handful of negative people stop our efforts. Mr. Foisy felt the older crowd does not like a pool and would not make use of it. Harvey Long commented on Fremont School busing for their pool.Mr. Smith felt a fee to use the pool would help defray the cost of maintenance. Jeff Bell reminded the Commission that dn February 26, an hour had been set aside for the Commission to speak with gri engineer regarding long range City APPROVED: CHAI SECRETARY Hall Complex. Jeff Bell spoke on the following activities sponsored by the Community Service Department. The volleyball season had ended on February 12 and was a very positive season.The Golden Age Softball League was ending and had been very successful. The Youth Job Referral program had slowed down considerably.The recreation news article was going to be shelved at this time. Jeff told the Commission that Tammy KirkManr had volunterred to work on the Senior Sounds newsletter.The Crime Prevention program was getting good response from the public.A men's basketball league was to start on March 2nd.The bicycle rodeo had very good response with 55 kids participating. The Valentines Dance for the gazebo had been cancelled due to lack of interest. Jeff announced an electricial mistake had been corrected with the ballfields and tennis courts and the proceedings were in the final stage. Phil Richardson returned the meeting back to the swimming pool fund raising.The question of should we continue was asked. Much discussion was held on this item. Discussion was held on the Horse Show. There had been good response to the initial expense fund raising.The P & M arena had been ok'ed.All plans were progressing smoothly.DeDe Scheff was working on the Fish Bowl idea. Jeff Bell and Harvey Long had brought a flatbed trailer to city hall to hold aluminum cans which are selling for 30Q a pound.A slogan of "Drive to Dive" was on the trailer and all were urged to save their cans. Jeff Bell spoke on the summer recreation plan.SRP gave us a break down on cost of summer rate, $1.36 per room.Utilities for recreation program would cost approxi- mately $1000.00.Jeff stated we had about $16,000 to work with on programs. Phil Richardson suggested Fire Arms Safety be added in program. Ron Staples made a motion to ddjourn with Raymond Foisy making the second.Motion carried unanimously.
