HomeMy WebLinkAbout1981 10.26 PRC MinutesCITY OF APACHE JUNCTION PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION 1001 North Idaho Road Apache Junction, Arizona REGULAR MEETING October 26, 1981 A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission was held on October 26, 1981 at 7:00 P.m. at the Apache Junction City Hall Complex pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. PRESENT: Lois Broman, Chairman Phil Richardson, vice chairman DeDe Scheff, secretary Ron Staples Michael Carden Margaret Carlin Harvey Long. Hedy Hall Janice Palson STAFF:Jeff Bell, Community Services Superintendent CALL TO ORDER: ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES: SUPERINTENDENT'S COMMENTS: Lois Broman, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., and led the Pledge of Allegiance. DeDe Scheff made a motion to accept the agenda as presented, with Michael Carden making the second.Motion carried unanimously. A motion was made by Ron Staples to accent the minutes of the regular meeting of September 28 as presented.Motion was seconded by Margaret Carlin, and carried unanimously. Jeff Bell briefed the Commission on activities and happenings in the Com- munity Services Department. OLD BUSINESS: Review of Boxing Tournament:Ron Staples updated the Commission on the Boxing Tournament held on October 24. He stated approximately $500.00 would be deposited in the swimming pool fund as oroceeds received from the tournament. Review of Work Session: Karvey Long made a motion to request the Mayor present a certificate of appreci- ation to Lyle Webster for his part and sponsorship of the Boxing Tournament. Ron Staples seconded the motion which carried unanimously. Jeff Bell brought the Commission up to date on the work session held on October 15, 1981 regarding the BLM land and application. Update from Land Use:Harvey Long briefed the Commission on the Land Use Committee on which he is a representative. P & R Commission Regular Meeting October 26, 1981 page 2 Update Information Booth: Halloween Plans: Update Equine Committee: Pre -School Program: Lost Dutchman Days: NEW BUSINESS: Governor's Task Force: Margaret Carlin, Chairman for Inform- ation at Lost Dutchman Days, stated she had not been able to attend the last committee meeting.Therefore, there was no further information. Jeff Bell reviewed the final plans for Halloween with the Commission.The men from the Commission were to meet at City Hall at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday to pre- pare for the costume contest, and the women were to meet at the Community Christian Church to assist with the movie.Everyone would be at City Hall to assist with bagging the candy and the contest at 1:00 p.m. Harvey Long stated there was nothing to report as there had been no further meetings. Jeff Bell briefed the Commission on the Pre -School Program which had began on October 6.There are 22 four year olds enrolled, and plans to begin a 3 -year old session on November 3rd are being formulated. The Commission discussed plans for a float to be entered in the Lost Dutch- man Parade.DeDe is to check on the price for a banner for the float.Ron Staples made a motion to purchase a banner with Harvey Long making the second. Motion carried unanimously. The Commission was invited to attend the meeting with the Governor's Task Force which was established to determine the needs of Parks and Recreation in Arizona. Welcome Winter Visitor:Jeff Bell briefed the Commission on the plans being made by the Community Ser- vices Department and the Chamber of Commerce for Welcome Winter Visitor Day which will be November 21, 1981. Christmas Tree Lighting: BOARD DISCUSSION: ADJOURNMENT: APPROVED: CHAIRMA The Commission was briefed on plans being made with the Chamber of Commerce for Santa's arrival in Apache Junction and the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
