REGULAR MEETING
October 24,1983
A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission
was hled on October 24,1983 at 7:00 p.m.at the Apache Junction City Hall
pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

STAFF PRESENT:Jeff Bell,Community Services Superintendent

SUPERINTENDENT'S COMMENTS:
Janice Pal son made a motion to accept the
agenda as presented.Lois Broman seconded
the motion which passed unanimously.

regular meeting as presented.Chuck Heermans
seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
Staff briefed the Commission on the status
of the various programs currently being
offered by the Community Services Department.
Little Rec'rs continues four days per week,
with sixty children participating.
Men's Softball Double -Elimination tournament
will conclude with the championship game on
November 3.
Registration is currently being taken for
an Adult Co-ed Volleyball league.League
play will begin on November 14 and continue
twice a week for ten weeks.A registration
fee of $50.00 will be charged.
Staff told the Commission that registration
for the City's first Senior Dance Aerobics
class continues.The program is aimed
at individuals over 50 years of age.

OLD BUSINESS
A.Swimming Pool Update:
B.Halloween:
The City's 5,000 -Meter Steeple Run,originally
scheduled for February 19,1983 has been
re -scheduled for December 3.The run will
take place in Prospector Park.
Staff briefed the Commission on the October 22
"Put -A -Lid -On -Litter"Day.Locally,clean-up
efforts were centered on an area of land
east of Apache Junction,formerly occupied
by transients and squatters.Individuals
representing the City staff,Apache Junction
Search and Rescue,and the Superstition
Horsemans Association were present.
Plans are being made for the Third Annual
Goldan Ages Softball league.Staff hopes
to begin the league in mid -December,
rather than the traditional first of January.
Hopefully,this will alleviate the problem
of the winter visitor team members returning
home for the summer.
Staff told the Commission that the City/
Chamber of Commerce Christmas party will
be held on December 16.-Commission members
will be receiving their invitations in the
near future.
Staff briefed the Commission on the status
of the swimming pool.Construction of the
pool is proceeding smoothly.Tilework and
placement of diving boards and lifeguard
chairs is being completed.
Bathhouse construction continues.A slight
delay in the arrival of various plumbing
fixtures will cause only a minor scheduling
problem.Both facilities continue to operate
under the originally scheduled completion
date.
Staff will be giving the Parks and Recreation
Commission a tour of the project upon
completion of both the pool and bathhouse.
Michael Carden,Chairman,questioned the
location of a vending machine/rest area.
Lois Broman questioned money available
for benches,tables,etc.Staff told her
that of the $55,000.00 Lease Purchase
payment fund,$2,000.00 remains for
purchasing banches,clothes baskets,etc.
The Commission discussed contacting civic
organizations for assistance in purchasing
pool accessories,e.g.,shading.
A broad general discussion followed.
Staff briefed the Commission on the Halloween
Carnival scheduled for Monday,October 31
at the High School Cafetorium.The carnival
will consist of 14 game booths,a Jack -0 -Lantern
contest,costume contest,and a magic show.
Mr.Bell requested assistance from the Commission
with selling game tickets.

Activities):
Michael Carden,Chairman,briefed the
Commission on his presentation to the City
Council on October 17.Mr.Carden told
the Council that his main opposition to
grading Prospector Park was the lack of
funds available for continuing development.
Chuck Heermans,Vice -Chairman,also attended
the meeting.Mr.Heermans was in favor
of allowing grading,basing his decision
on the grading work done on the adjacent
Jaycees land.
Staff told the Commission that the issue
of Prospector Park development was to be
included on the upcoming City Council
agenda.
Chuck Heermans voiced •concenr over the City's
committment to using the services of the
Superior Training School.Superior has
requested that the City be responsible for
paying gas charges when work is done on
City property.
Staff told Mr.Heermans that the porposal
submitted to the City Council by Superior
contained no financial committment on the
part of the City.
A broad discussion on Prospector Park followed.
Staff explained the Commission's function
during the Lost Dutchman Days celebration.
The Commission has in the past sponsored
an information on recreation opportunities
available in Apache Junction.Mr.Bell is
the co-chairman of sports tournaments.
The initial registration for the Youth
Soccer League was held on October 22.
Registration will continue through November 4.
An organizational meeting for parents interested
in assisting as coaches and/or referees has
been scheduled for November 9.Following the
meeting,Staff will prepare league rosters.
One -hundred and four,6 through 13 year
olds are currently registered.The regular
season play is scheduled to begin in January.
Staff will sponsor soccer clinics to train
coaches and officials.
Staff briefed the Commission on the status of
the suggested special interest classes.Mr.
Bell met with school officials to avoid
duplication of locally offered programs.
A master list of currently offered programs
and suggested classes will be composed and
reviewed by school officials and staff.
A second meeting will be scheduled at a later
date.

ADJOURNMENT:
The Welcome Winter Visitors Day celebration,
scheduled for November 19 is in the final
stages of planning.Local businesses
have been contacted soliciting their
assistance in welcoming back our winter
visitors.Entertainment,refreshments,and
sale tables will be set up at major Apache
Junction area shopping centers.A Senior Citizens
Day sponsored by the School District,and
a Soroptimist International,chili dinner will
also be held on November 19.
The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony
will be held on December 2 in front of the
City Hall complex.The Mayor will present
the opening speech,and the Apache Junction
"Young Spirits"youth choir will perform.
Additional activities include a performance
by Kim's Dance Studio dancers,and the
arrival of Santa Claus via firetruck.
Michael Carden,Chairman,requested that the
following items be included on next months
agenda:Swimming Pool,Status of BLM Land
Acquisition (Green Belt),Prospector Park
Update,Youth Soccer Program,Christmas Program.
There being no further business,Janice Palson
made a motion to adjourn.Lois Broman
seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
