REGULAR MEETING
April 23,1984
A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation
Commission was held on April 23,1984 at 7:00 p.m.at the Apache
Junction City Hall pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

STAFF PRESENT:Jeff Bell,Community Services Superintendent
Phyllis Wolfe,Secretary
CALL TO ORDER:Michael Carden,Chairman,called the
meeting to order at 7:03 p.m.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:Michael Carden,Chairman,led the Com-
mission in the pledge of allegiance.
ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA:Chuck Heermans,made a motion to accept
the agenda as presented.Lois Broman
seconded the motion which passed unani-
mously.
SUPERINTENDENTS COMMENTS:Dance Aerobics and Jazzercise classes
will be concluding this week.
OLD BUSINESS:
A.Swimming Pool Fees and
Schedule Discussion:
The Men's 3 -Man Basketball League con-
tinues.The first half of the league
is almost over.
Little Rec'rs program ended.Graduation
ceremonies were April 9,1984.This pro-
gram continues to grow every year.
Women's Softball League concluded about
3 weeks ago.
Staff told Commission that our Second
Annual Dog Show had about 25 dogs.Trophies
and ribbons were awarded.
Staff distributed a pool schedule to the
Commission members.Jeff Bell informed
the Commission that City Council approved
the recommendation on the Swimming Pool
Fees,except for one.The Season Pass
for a Family was changed from $45.00 to
$40.00.An advanced Life -Saving Class

will be offered on May 16 to all P.E.
teachers and current pool staff so they
can be certified.
Colleen Ortega will be the Pool Manager.
Nick McVickers will be Assistant Manager-
Head Life Guard.
The new Summer Recreation Brochure will
be newspaper form consisting of 8 sheets.
Mt.View Investments will pay for the
brochure.Special events included this
year on Saturdays are:Phoenix Zoo Day,
Big Surf Trip,Kite Flying Contest,and
the 1st Annual Frisbee Throw Contest.
The Community Services Bus will provide
transportation.
Staff told the Commission there were
approximately 400 kids in attendance at
the 3rd Annual Easter Egg Hunt.Jeff
Bell suggested next year try to get twice
as many eggs.
After a broad general discussion,Janice
Palson made a motion to invite the app-
licants to a special meeting for a brief
introduction.A recommendation will then
be made to the council for appointment at
the June 5,1984 City Council meeting.
Ted Millspaugh seconded the motion which
passed unanimously.
The Commission held a lengthy discussion
concerning various ways to advertize and
inform the public of the need for a one-
time budget override.A special meeting
will be held on May 3 to begin implemen-
ting suggested ideas.
Michael Carden,Chairman,requested that
the following items be included on next
months agenda:Discuss Budget Override,
Swimming Pool,Election of Talent Bank
Applicants,July 4th,Land and Water Con-
servation Funding.
Staff told the Commission approximately
one million dollars will be available from
the A.O.R.C.C.The deadline for applica-
tion is June 1,1984.We will know on May
15 i f there is any match money to apply for.
Jeff Bell informed the Commission B.L.M.
would like to deed 633 acres of land to the
City of Apache Junction for the purpose of

recreation.After a brief general dis-
cussion,Lois Broman made a motion to
apply for an additional 633 acres of land
that B.L.M.has offered.Chuck Heermans,
Vice Chairman,seconded the motion which
passed unanimously.
There being no further business,Ted
Millspaugh made a motion to adjourn.
Janice Palson seconded the motion which
passed unanimously.
