REGULAR MEETING
June 25,1984
A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation
Commission was held on June 25,1984 at 7:00 p.m.at the Apache
Junction City Hall pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

Lois Broman,Secretary filling in as
Chairman,due to the absence of both
the Chairman and Vice -Chairman,called
the meeting to order at 7:07 p.m.
Lois Broman,Secretary,led the Commis-
sion in the pledge of allegiance.
Janice Palson made a motion to accept
the agenda as presented.Ted Millspaugh
seconded the motion which passed unani-
mously.
Janice Palson made a motion to accept
the minutes of April 23,1984 regular
meeting,May 3,1984 special meeting and
the May 28,1984 regular meeting.Ted
Millspaugh seconded the motion which
carried unanimously.
Jeff Bell welcomed new Commissioners
Jack Rivers and James Appler to the Parks
and Recreation Commission.
The 1st Annual Frisbee Contest was held
at the Junior High School on Saturday,
June 23.Staff hopes to make this con-
test an annual event.
Twelve teams will be participating in the
Men's Summer Softball League.The league
will start after July 1.
The Women's Softball League will begin
play in Mid -July after the Mesa League
has ended.

A trip to the Phoenix Zoo is scheduled
for Saturday,July 7.There are 35
people registered for the trip which is
open for all ages.
Staff told the Commission that the Sum-
mer Recreation Program is going well this
year.There are approximately 650 kids
enrolled in the programs.There is a
decrease in participants outside of swim-
ming.
Janice Pal son suggested next year cutting
out some classes that were not so success-
ful.
Ted Millspaugh commended the staff for do-
ing a great job at the Community/School
Swimming Pool.
Staff informed the Commission $300,000.00
is going into the budget July 1,1984 for
development of Prospector Park.The City
Manager,Public Works Director and Staff
met with Carter Associates to discuss the
planning,design,and engineering of the
park.
Carter Associates will send a proposal
back to negotiate,then work will begin
on the plans.
Staff briefed the Commission on the 1.2
million dollars that is available for
Federal Grant money.We applied for
$3000,000.00 to match our $300,000.00.
The preliminary application was due by
the end of June,and has been submitted.
The State Park required an Archaeology
Survey done on the site,which will cost
$350.00.A.S.U.will handle the survey.
The full application will take some time
to prepare,and is due the end of August.
A.O.R.C.C.will recommend the projects
in September.In October the money will
actually be awarded.
The swimming pool is averaging between
300 to 350 people a day.Memorial Day
was our biggest day with 600 people in
attendance.
Staff suggested -various ways -next -years
budget could be Used,such as:adding
shaded area,more cool decking,pop
machines,lane ropes for competetive
swimming and a handicap chair lift.

Staff reported one incident of vandal-
ism.The cover of a security light was
broken.
Jeff Bell explained Fourth of July activi-
ties to the Commission.Staff told the
Commission 14 organizations will offer
food or game booths.The day -long activi-
ties will begin at 9:00 a.m.and conclude
with fireworks at approximately 8:45 p.m.
Lois Broman,Secretary,requested nomina-
tions for the positions of Commission
Chairman,Vice -Chairman and Secretary.
Michael Carden was nominated by Ted
Millspaugh for Chairman.Lois Broman
was nominated by Janice Palson for
Chairman.Lois Broman declined the nom-
ination.Michael Carden was unanimously
elected Commission Chairman.
Janice Palson nominated Ted Millspaugh
for Vice -Chairman.Ted Millspaugh nom-
inated Chuck Heermans for Vice -Chairman.
By a majority vote Ted Millspaugh was
elected Commission Vice -Chairman.
Janice Palson nominated Redena Bilotti
for Secretary.Redena Bilotti nominated
Lois Broman for Secretary.By a majority
vote Lois Broman was elected Commission
Secretary.
All Parks and Recreation Commission offi-
cials will serve for a term of one year,
expiring July 1,1985.

Money,Swimming Pool Update,Summer Rec-
reation Review,Golf Course.
There being no further business,Ted
Millspaugh made a motion to adjourn.
Redena Bilotti seconded the motion which
passed unanimously.
