REGULAR MEETING
October 22, 1984
A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission
was held on October 22, 1984 at 7:00 p.m. at the Apache Junction City Hall
pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

Michael Carden, Chairman, called the meet-
ing to order at 7:10 p.m.
Michael Carden, Chairman, led the Commis-
sion in the pledge of allegiance.
Janice Palson made a motion to accept the
agenda as presented.Redena Bilotti sec-
onded the motion which passed unanimously.
Janice Palson made a motion to accept the
minutes of August 27, 1984 regular meeting
and September 24, 1984 regular meeting.
Jack Rivers seconded the motion which passed
unanimously.
Staff briefed the Commission on the status
of the various programs currently being
offered by the Community Services Department.
Mens and Womens Softball League has concluded
with 19 teams participating.
Co-ed Volleyball League began last Thursday
night, October 18.Eleven teams will be par-
ticipating on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
for approximately 5 weeks.
Plans are being made for the "Welcome Winter
Visitors Day", which will be November 17,
1984.Letters were sent to over 300 busi-
nesses asking them to participate in sidewalk
sales or specials for the day.
Approximately 50 Senior Citizens rode the
City bus to the Heard Museum on October 5,
1984.Another trip is scheduled on November
2 to the Phoenix Zoo.

NEW BUSINESS:
A.Halloween Carnival:
Little Rec'rs Program is continuing with
over 60 pre-schoolers involved with the
program.
The A.J. Youth Soccer League is now under-
way with over 200 children participating.
Community Services is helping line the
soccer fields and register children for
the program.
Chuck Baker, Recreation Coordinator, is
preparing for the 3rd Annual 5-K Steeple
Run, to be held on November 17, at 9:00
a.m. at Prospector Park.
Jeff Bell informed the Commission, he
was presented with the Young Professional
of the Year Award, by the Arizona Parks
and Recreation Association.
Staff told the Commission, drawings, speci-
fications, and bid documents are currently
being completed for the development of
Phase I of Prospector Park.It is esti-
mated that by the end of November we will
be ready to go out to bid.
Staff will make a presentation to the
Arizona Outdoor Recreation Coordinating
Commission on November 8, 1984, request-
ing the $300,000.00 grant proposal be
approved and justifying the need.4.2
million dollars have been requested through-
out the state with only 1.1 million available.
Jeff Bell presented the Commission with
an inventory of existing facilities and
some possible improvements that could be
made.
After reviewing the sample 5 -Year Parks
Improvement Program, the Commission prior-
itized the facilities in the following
order:1.Prospector Park, 2.Complex
Park, 3.Little League, 4.City/School
Complex, 5.Equestrian Trail, 6.Veterans
Memorial Park.
The Commission suggested some facilities
be included.Mr. Bell will figure cost
and report back next meeting.
Staff informed the Commission there will
be a Halloween Carnival from 4:00 to 9:00
p.m. at the High School Cafetorium.This
years carnival should have a larger turn-
out than ever before with 22 game booths.
Local clubs involved in the carnival are
the following:F.H.A., Creative Arts,
Drama, Eagles, A.J. Youth Soccer League,
A.J. Little League, and the A.J. Fire Club.

Staff presented the Swimming Pool Final
Report to the Commission for the 1984
Season.The final report included:
Season - May 26 through September 9
Days open - 92
August Daily Attendance - 263 (Public
Swimming only)
Pool was closed for ten days in Mid -August
for repairs.
Revenues

Daily Receipts -7,738.89

Michael Carden, Chairman, asked Staff to
contact Suzanne Bartell and question her
absence.
There being no further business, Jack
Rivers made a motion to adjourn.Janice
Palson seconded the motion which passed
unanimously.
