REGULAR MEETING
November 26,1984
A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission
was held on November 26,1984 at 7:00 p.m.at the Apache Junction City Hall
pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

STAFF PRESENT:Jeff Bell,Community Services Superintendent

CALL TO ORDER:Michael Carden,Chairman,called the meeting
to order at 7:03 p.m.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:Michael Carden,Chairman,led the Commission
in the pledge of allegiance.
ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA:Ted Millspaugh,Vice -Chairman,made a motion
to accept the agenda as presented.Redena
Bilotti seconded the motion which passed
unanimously.
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES:
SUPERINTENDENTS COMMENTS:
Lois Broman,Secretary,made a motion to
accept the minutes of October 22,1984
regular meeting.Chuck Heermans seconded
the motion which passed unanimously.
Staff briefed the Commission on the status
of the various programs being offered by
the Community Services Department.
The Adult Volleyball League,with 10 teams
participating,will conclude the first of
December.The double elimination tourna-
ment will begin this week.
Fifty-five runners participated in the 5-K
Steeple Run at Prospector Park on November
17,1984.Kyle Sawyer,a track coach at
Westwood High School,won the race with a
time of 15:47.There was also some compe-
tition between the State's Department of
Public Safety employees and our local fire
fighters.
The 4th Annual Welcome Winter Visitors Day
was held on November 17,1984.Many of

Conservation Fund:
our communities merchants offered spe-
cials and sidewalk sales for the day.
This event was co -sponsored with the
Chamber of Commerce.
The A.J.Youth Soccer League started on
November 17,1984.Approximately 250
six through fourteen year olds are in-
volved in this activity.Staff helped
with the registration and field prepara-
tion.
Planning has begun for the Christmas
Basket Project with Jeff Bell and Sylvia
Stevens as co-chairmans.
Staff is expecting an increase this year
over last years 165 families that were
assisted.Deliveries will be made two
days before Christmas.
Staff continues to provide assistance
to the Apache Junction Reach Out Food
Bank and the Community Action Human
Resource Agency by transporting food
for distribution or storage.
Friday,November 16,marked the con-
clusion of the Fall/Winter session of
Little Rec'rs.This activity continues
to be very popular,with over 60 three
and four year olds enrolled.A new
session will begin January 21,1985.
The Little League Softball Field is
being used almost every night by lady
softball players preparing for the up-
coming season.
Approximately 55 Senior Citizens rode
the Community Services Bus to the Phoenix
Zoo on November 2,1984.Staff will
schedule one trip per month with the
Pinal/Gila Senior Citizens.
Golden Ages Softball is getting ready to
start.The organizational meeting will
be December 11,1984.The league will be-
gin just after the 1st of the year.
Staff informed the Commission the 1984
Halloween Carnival was highly successful.
Approximately $1,400.00 was raised by ten
different civic groups.Approximately
600 individuals were in attendance.
Staff made a presentation to the Arizona
Outdoor Recreation Coordinating Commission
on November 8,1984,on Prospector Park
and the need of recreational facilities
in Apache Junction.On December 7,1984,
the Commission will make a final decision
on where the money will be allocated.

Discussion:
Jeff Bell informed the Commission that
we are waiting to see what kind of grant
money we will receive from A.O.R.C.C.
before we finalize the plans for the ball-
fields,parking and picnic areas.Ted
Millspaugh questioned how long untill we
receive the money?Staff explained the
money will be available immediately upon
approval.
Staff and Commission discussed the con-
cession stand for Prospector Park.A
broad general discussion followed.
Staff informed the Commission drawings
and specifications will be submitted to
the Arizona Water Company for approval of
the water line extension.A complete set
of plans will be submitted to the city and
county for their approval.A discussion
followed.
Jeff Bell presented the Commission with a
revised Five -Year Parks Improvement Pro-
gram.The revision included.changes that
were requested by the Commission previously.
After much discussion,a tentative prior-
tization of improvements was agreed on
and placed in a five year program.
Financing alternatives,ranging from avail-
able grant monies to land donations by civic
organizations and churches were discussed.
Mr.Bell stated he will continue with the
Commission's recommendation and investigate
the financing alternatives that were dis-
cussed.A report will be given at the next
meeting.
Staff told the Commission the Christmas
Tree Lighting ceremony will be held on
Friday,December 7 at 6:00 p.m.at the
City Hall Complex.Entertainment will be
provided by the Desert Sounds,Young Spirits
and Kim's Youth Dance Company.There will
be refreshments available to all those in
attendance.
This event is sponsored by the City of
Apache Junction and the A.J.Chamber of
Commerce.
Mr.Bell explained this item was placed on
the agenda at the request of Jack Rivers.
The item will be continued next month due
to Mr.Rivers absence.

Jeff Bell informed the Commission next
months Parks and Recreation Meeting is on
Christmas Eve.Mike Carden,Chairman,
suggested cancelling the December Parks
and Recreation meeting.A special meeting
will be held in January i f necessary.
There being no further business,Lois
Broman,Secretary,made a motion to adjourn.
Ted Millspaugh,Vice -Chairman,seconded the
motion which passed unanimously.
