Councilman Jimenez, City Council Liaison
to the Youth Advisory Board, expressed his
intentions to attend as many meetings as
possible and his pride in having accomplished
the reality of this Board. Also the pride
and appreciation he has for the time and effort
the Student Council and School Superintendent
put into this Board and the Adult members who
took the time to serve on this Board.
Councilman Jimenez informed the Board that this
was an easy decision for the City Council to
make, because community youth involvement is
deeply needed, recommendations resulting from
this board in solving some of our community's
problems and needs is very important for laying
the ground work on what this board is going to
accomplish not only for the immediate future
but also in helping long range problems and
needs for years to come.
In conclusion Councilman Jimenez, added that
this is a great opportunity, grasp on to it,
make it both fun and serious, we need the brain
power and the ideas you have to offer.Thank
you.
Vice Mayor Bakkedahl on behalf of Mayor Hill
welcomed the Board and emphasized the importance
of each member expressing their individual views
and ideas as this input by the youth of our
community is what the City wants to hear.He
thanked the members of the Board and expressed
well wishes for their coming year of service.
Deanene •Weber while associated with the Youth
Advisory Board in Tempe saw solutions to problems
that also needed to be addressed in the Apache
Junction area so she contacted Councilman Jimenez
about the possibilities of adopting a similar
Board.
Mrs. Weber expressed the importance on getting
both Adult and Youth input on problems and needs
to insure the success of this type of Board.
Mrs. Weber went on to suggest the first steps
needed to be taken.First, a need analysis
consisting of personal opinion on problems and
needs.Secondly we need to prioritize these
problems and needs see whats being handled by
social service agencies and concentrate attention
on each problem or need in order, come up with a
viable solution and make a recommendation to the
City Council.
Deanene Weber inquired on whether anyone would
be interested in her contacting some guest
speakers to get their input as to help us form
our Board.
Everyone agreed this would be helpful and useful.
C. Discussion of Board's
Objectives and Goals:Jeff Bell asked everyone to jot down two problems
or needs they feel are the two most important

in our community. Then turn to the person
next to you pick out two and prioritize them.
We will then list and prioritize these.
After minimal discussion everyone came up with
the same needs 1) Places to go, things to do
(like a multipurpose Youth Center)2) Boredom.
Deanene Weber informed the Board that she and
Councilman Jimenez have already talked with a
gentleman from the Boys and Girls Club in Tempe
on how to get partial funding from the United
Way for a Boys Club in Apache Junction, which
consists of not only recreation but also
counseling, after school jobs and field trips.
Mr. Bell asked if he could be a guest speaker.
Deanene Weber said he would be more than happy
and she will contact him.
Brian Harrington brought up the Salvation Army's
After School Program which has arts & crafts
and nature hikes just to name a few.
Jeff Bell added that the Salvation Army's After
school Program started out with 15 participants
and has grown to approximately 60 participants.
Sheri Greves feels that summer jobs are needed
but the public needs to be informed, possibly
through the Schools.
Betty Helowicz suggested that liquor laws need
to be modified to increase cashier jobs that
would be available to our youth.
Deanene Weber said she could contact someone
from the Mesa Youth Center Job and Job Training
to be a guest speaker.
Norma Lebario suggested that students could be
coordinators a the Youth Center to provide some
jobs.
Meribeth Baker feels the biggest problem is to
make the community aware of children and student
needs and get them involved.
Brian Harrington believes that with the majority
of the community being elders they really don't
care about youth needs.
Sophia Gargrave with project Help gets most of her
donations from the elderly in the community and
believes that if they are informed they are
very willing to help.
Jeff Bell commented on how well everyone speaks
up.
Brian Harrington suggested youth members get input
from other students and relay back to the Board.
