HomeMy WebLinkAbout1986 04.10 PRC MinutesCITY OF APACHE JUNCTION YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD 1001 North Idaho Road Apache Junction, Arizona 85219 REGULAR MEETING April 10, 1986 A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Youth Advisory Board was held on April 10, 1986 at 7:00 P.M. at the Apache Junction City Hall pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. PRESENT ABSENT Deanene Weber, Chairman Brian Harrington, Vice Chairman Susan Pittman, Secretary Elizabeth Henry (Excused) Meribeth Baker Sheryl Martinez (Excused) Sofia Gargrave Sheri Greves (Excused) Dennis Hultman Betty Helowicz (Excused) Norma Lebario Paula D. Jager Max Ragsdale Jason Hutchens Terry Lopez Tony Lorenzo Rick Rundhaug Chrissy Smith David Umlah Becky Winkle STAFF PRESENT: Jeff Bell, Community Services Superintendent Mary March, Secretary Chuck Baker, Recreation Supervisor CALL TO ORDER:Deanene Weber, chairman call the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:Chairman Weber led the Board in the Pledge of Allegiance. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES: •BUSINESS: A. Needs Assessment Update: Jeff Bell introduced to the Board Paula Jager, new adult member and Max Ragsdale, new youth member, Chrissy Smith made a motion to accept the Agenda as presented.Becky Winkle seconded this motion which passed unanimously. Meribeth Baker made a motion to accept the minutes of March 13, 1986, regular meeting as presented. Sophia Gargrave seconded this motion which passed unanimously. After lengthy discussion with concerns on better identifying question #4 and including questions on employment and counseling services.Norma Lebario made a motion to except questions 1-3 as presented adn amending #4 by breaking it down into categories with examples in each category plus choices of often, infrequently and never.Rich Rundhaug seconded this motion which passed unani- mously. Sophia Gargrave made a motion to add questions on employment and counseling as follows: Do you feel ther are adequate employment opportunities for Apache Junction youth? yes or no.Are you interest ed in employment? with choices of Summer or After- school.Do you feel there is a need for additional youth counseling services? yes or no.And if so what types of counseling? with examples.Jason Hutchens seconded this motion which passed unanimou; YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD REGULAR MEETING APRIL 10, 1986 PAGE 2 B. Request for Upcoming Agenda Items: BOARD DISCUSSION: PUBLIC COMMENT: ADJOURNMENT: APPROVED: i\IL \f Jeff Bell informed the Board that he would put this into final form and have ready for presenta- tion to Mr. Nine and Mr. Short by the middle of the week. After minimal discussion Meribeth Baker made a motion to shelf fundraising until there is a specific project to raise funds for.Terry Lopez seconded this motion which passed unanimously. Norma Lebario made a motion to recommend that the City Council set aside $60,000 for the Youth Advisory Board with understanding that pending the outcome of Needs Assessment Survey as to specify personnel, services or facility needs.Sophia Gargrave seconded this motion which passed un- animously. Beginning with the description of the Community Services Department, Jeff Bell, continued by in- forming the Board on how the department was estab- lished in 1980 with highlights on establishment of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the City/School Complex project, application for Lease of 265 acres of B.L.M. Land, the Swimming Pool campaign, develop- ment of playground area at City Hall Complex and the addition of a full time secretary in 1981.In 1982 the Gazebo at Veterans Memorial Park was built by donations, a Park Naming Contest was held thus providing Prospector Park as name for new park that planning & design process was intiated on, more B.L.M. land was applied for in 1983, 1600 acres of equestrian trail, Little League Field was relit, Swimming Pool was built, parks laborer was hired to maintain park, $100,000.00 in grant monwy was received for park improvements. Mr. Bell went on to list some of the recreational and special event programs & activities that have been offered through the Community Services Dept. ranging from Itty-Bitty Olympics & Pre -School to Frisbee Contest, Swim Lessons, Volleyball, Softball Drama & Magic. Mr. Bell continued by summarizing our current pro- jects; Phase I of Prospector Park is 90% complete will be starting Phase II shortly.Working draw- ings for City Hall Complex Park are being completed and Archaeological investigation services for the Hohokam site are being looked into. Needs Assessment Survey, Guest Speaker - Youth Counselor NONE NONE There being no further business Terry Lopez made a motion to adjourn.Meribeth Baker seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
