REGULAR MEETING
March 27, 1989
/1% A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation
Commission was held on March 27, 1989 at 7.00 p.m. at the Apache
Junction City Hall Complex pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

STAFF PRESENT: Jeff Bell, Director of Community Services
Chuck Baker, Recreation Supervisor

CALL TO ORDER: Nick McVicker called the meeting to order
at 7:00 p.m.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Nick McVicker led the Commission in the
Pledge of Allegiance.
ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: Loyd Lynch made a motion to accept the
agenda as presented. Ramona Sleeseman
seconded this motion which passed unanimously.
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES• Paul Miller made a motion to accept the
minutes of February 27, 1989, regular meeting
as presented. Loyd Lynch seconded this
motion which passed unanimously.
STAFF COMMENTS. Mr. Bell distributed monthly highlights
for the Commission's review and asked if
they had received invitations to ground
breaking ceremonies on March 30th.
Mr. Bell informed the Commission that on
April 8th fundraising basketball games,
between the A.J. Police Department and
Fire Department, City of A.J. versus the
A.J. School District and Channel 3 versus
the A.J. All Stars are scheduled, proceeds
will benefit the Apache Junction Headstart
program.

OLD BUSINESS-
A. County Park Acquisition. Mr. Bell relayed that he has sent a
letter to Pinal County Supervisor,
Roy Hudson, expressing City & Commission
concerns on the County Park, at this
time we have not received notice of
the County's intentions or replies.
The proposed County Complex will be
phased over an eight year period of
/'� time and will take up about 9 acres.
B.L.M. will approve this as public
use.
B. Sister Cities Discussion: Mr. Bell informed the Commission we
are still waiting to receive information
from the national organization.
C: Facility Use Manual. Mr Bell recommended to the Commission
3 changes to the Facility Use Manual.
First picnic packages need to include
a combination package for all day events
rather than individually as in groups
A and B. The department has put together
a bag of equipment totaling about $70.00
in worth, and would like to recommend
a refundable deposit of $25.00 and
a $15.00 user fee. Secondly, we would
like to include a sponsorship program
to be utilized by low income families
and supported by a network of fraternal
and civic organizations who pledge
$100.00 annually to be drawn on for
child sponsorship in individual programs
or activities on a rotating basis and
AM•Ik thirdly, an increase in organized use
of ballfields, i.e. softball tournament,
from $25.00 per field/per day to $35.00
per field/per day to offset maintenance
cost.
Mr. Bell will plug in the changes and
return it to the Commission in final
form for their approval.
D. Status of Park Projects. Mr. Bell relayed to the Commission
that Pinal County requested an itemized
list of what will be used and served
at the Little League Concession Building
and we are awaiting their approval.
Little League plans are complete.
Prospector Park Phase III plans are also
complete, consultants are working on written
specifications and contract documents for
bid packets.

Shuffleboard Court removal/replacement
plans are going to be received tomorrow
and reviewed by our department and the
Building Department. We should be going
out for bid in a couple of weeks.
NEW BUSINESS:
I, A. July 4th Celebration: Mr. Bell informed the Commission we
have received approval to purchase
Fireworks for 4th of July and have
contracted Igor's Cowboy Jazz Band
to provide musical entertainment.
B. Parks Division Trainee
Program- Mr. Bell relayed to the Commission
an idea for a trainee program to lessen,
the difficulty of selecting perspective
Parks Laborers for interviews, due
to the amount of applications usually
received and the type of work involved.
Applicants would be selected by a blind
draw, placed into the training program
at $4.00 to $5.00 per hour for 6 months
at the end of this time if they are
interested in a position and the City
is interested in offering it to them
they would be hired on as a Parks
Laborer at $6.00 to $7.00 per hour.

BOARD DISCUSSION: Ramona Sleeseman relayed to staff and
and Commission that at her company

the park.
Nick McVicker suggested some recessed
lighting be installed at ramadas at
Prospector Park so as it gets dark
you can see what your eating.
PUBLIC COMMENT: NONE
ADJOURNMENT- Their being no further business Loyd
Lynch made a motion to adjourn. Ramona
Sleeseman seconded this motion which
passed unanimously.
