Recreation Department.

to order at 4:35 p.m.
Jeff Bell, distributed copies of a
proposed lease between the LDS
Church and the City, that staff has
been negotiating,to operate the
park site at the church for public
use.
Mr.Bell informed the Commission
that the church is considering
removing the $250,000.00 of
improvements at the site due to
their inability to properly operate
and maintain the facility.At the
Mayor's request, staff looked into
negotiating City/Public use of the
church owned recreation facility on
South Ironwood Road.After several
months of negotiating,the lease,
both entities, feel comfortable with
the terms of the lease presented.
Mr. Bell advised the Commission that
a recommendation will need to be
made to the City Council at the
DISCUSSION ON MODEL AVIATION
FACILITY:
Commission's regularly scheduled
meeting on May 24, 1993, regarding
the proposed lease.
Commission member Gary Mulholland
expressed concerns relating to the
restriction in the lease on parking
and Sunday use.He also questioned
the impact of taking on this project
on other prioritized park projects.
Chairman McVicker stated that he
felt the proposed lease provided an
unique opportunity for the City to
acquire park facilities without
development cost, and that the types
of facilities included in the park
will meet some unmet needs.
Mr.Bell commented that providing
funds can be made available to
adequately operate and maintain the
facility he felt the park site would
be used for both organized and
casual types of uses by the
community.
General comments, both pro and con
by the Commission concluded the
discussion on this item.
Mr.Bell informed the Commission
that he has been contact by
representatives from the Arizona
Model Aviators who are looking for
property to relocate a model
aviation facility from Mesa's Spook
Hill Park to the Apache Junction
area.
According to Mr. Bell the group is
particularly interested in some
property located south of Prospector
Park in the Maricopa County Flood
Control District Right of Way.Mr.
Bell expressed concerns on this site
due to its close proximity to the
park and to residential areas
southwest of this area.
The Commission will be asked to
formulate a recommendation on this
topic at their May 24, 1993 regular
meeting.
