Parks and Recreation Commission

A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission was held on June 1, 2005 at
6:00 p.m. at the Apache Junction City Hall pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

CALL TO ORDER:Chairman Nesser, called the meeting to order and led the Commission in the
Pledge of Allegiance.
ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: Conrad Pisinski made a motion to accept the agenda as presented.Mona
Barton seconded the motion passed unanimously.
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES:Conrad Pisinski made a motion to accept the minutes of April 6, 2005 as
presented. John Kantowski seconded and the motion passed
unanimously.
STAFF COMMENTS:Jeff Bell welcomed John Kantowski and Sandra Schenone aboard and
relayed to the commission that we have been struggling lately with Park Ranger
coverage, due to a full time Ranger being out with an injured shoulder.We
have been able to get someone temporarily assigned to help with coverage.We
also have interviewed two individuals for the Customer Service Representative
position and a second interview with staff was held yesterday, we are getting
their input and a decision should be made soon.
Theresa Nesser asked if the Commission members would be able to volunteer to
help fill some needs the department has.
Jeff Bell suggested that this be put on an agenda for discussion as John
Kantowski and Sandra Schenone had also asked about volunteering.
Jeff Bell relayed that applications for the Recreation Leader positions for the
Multi -generational Center closed last Friday.Interviews will be held to fill 10-
12 positions and than training will begin.

Mr. Bell further relayed to the commission that we are in our registration
process as always aquatic programs fill up fast, we do our best to accommodate
all participants.The pool also opened this past weekend and we only had two
minor issues. The phone number was changed and we had individuals calling
the police department to get a hold of the pool and individuals thought they
could get a family pass at the pool, so we let them know they could keep their
receipt and take it to the office and it would be applied toward their family pass.
Conrad Pisinski asked if we try to accommodate local kids first for swim
lessons. We do not have a residency requirement, we accommodate them all.
Mr. Bell relayed that we have accomplished all the minor projects
budgeted this year except for the parking lot improvements at Prospector
Park and we are working on it currently.Mr. Bell relayed the our parks
crew has been very busy renovating buildings and offices in our
relocation, we have realized a lot of saving because of the work they
have done.
Theresa Nesser suggested maybe looking into some kind of agreement
with the County's Facility Management Department to assist us in these
areas.
Mr. Bell informed the Commission that the City Council awarded Fitness
Equipment bid for approximately $130,000. Three bids were received, low
bidder did not meet specifications, high bidder did not sign forms or provide
cost breakdown.
Next Monday staff will go before the City Council to discuss the update
of Chapter 4 of the City Code which includes all our fees, to include the
Multigenerational Center so we can have in ordinance form for adoption
at the next council meeting.
We also have an agreement with Mesa Senior Services for discussion at
Mondays work session and approval at following council meeting.
We also have a Building Maintenance Position that we received 50
applications for which included 4 internal applicants we have
interviewed and will be selecting from the internal candidates.
Last word from the contractor, staff and furniture move in date is second
week of July.Still shooting for August opening.
Mr. Bell distributed copy of an article by the Arizona Heritage Alliance a
group supporting the Heritage Fund.The governor recently vetoed an
attempt to take 1.6 millions dollars from game and fish.This made the
33rd attempt by legislators to sweep heritage funds.
Mr. Bell relayed to the Commission that the City Manager would like to
hold off on submitting application until more critical issues dealing with
auction of state lands down south get worked out.

NEW BUSINESS:
A.Fiscal Year 2005/2006 Budget
Discussion:Mr. Bell distributed department budget request, all increases are related to the
Multi -Generational center and does not forseen any changes.
B.Swimming Pool Discussion:Commissioner Barr was not present at meeting.No discussion was held.
