kregular meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission was held on April 5,
2006, 6:00 p.m. at the Apache Junction City Hall pursuant to notice as prescribed by law.

CALL TO ORDER:
Chairman Nesser called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. and led the Commission in the
Pledge of Allegiance.
ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA:
Conrad Pisinski accepted the agenda as presented.John Kantowski seconded and the
motion passed unanimously.
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES:
Conrad Pisinski motioned to accept the minutes of March 1, 2006, regular meeting as
presented.Mona Barton seconded this motion which passed unanimously.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Mr. Bell informed the Commission, the Multi -Generational Center will be featured in an
upcoming issue of Recreation Management Magazine, receiving an award for innovative
& creative design, best utilization of space and money.VCBO was the design firm
nominated.
Mr. Bell introduced Dan Wilson, Recreation Coordinator - Aquatics & Special Events and
Corinne Cherryholmes, Recreation Assistant - Aquatics & Special Events.
Dan Wilson informed the Commission he started participating in Parks & Recreation
Programs when he was in 1st grade.A graduate of AJHS he began refereeing for P&R
in 1996, which led to helping in the office. In a short time he became one of the first
recreation assistance for P&R.Prior to his current capacity he filled the Recreation
Coordinator Sports position.He has been Aquatics & Special Events Coordinator for 7
months, and is this years State Chairman for New Mexico & Arizona, Pitch Hit and Run
Competition. Active with APRA he has received the "New Member Award".
Corinne Cherryholmes, grew up swimming competitively and wanted to be a lifeguard.
She has been guarding for eight years, seven of those year with AJP&R.She is a
certified lifeguard trainer, training and certifying all staff.She also has CPR, WSI and
AED trainer certifications.She is an active APRA member and also serves on the
American Red Cross Water Safety Committee and has her degree in criminology from
ASU.
OLD BUSINESS:
Presentation and discussion on Fiscal/Year 2006/07 Parks Recreation Budget proposal.
Mr. Bell distributed 06/07 budget proposal to the Commission and relayed that Finance
has finished their review and it has been forwarded to the City Managers Office.
We have proposed adjustments to part-time recreation positions at MGC from 24 hours
to 28 hours and are requesting funds for additional cardio equipment.The Parks Division
budget proposal includes finishing touches to landscaping at MGC and adjacent Park,
extension of the walkway to the Library and minor improvements at Prospector Park.
Open Space has not been address in the budget.City would need to budget a position
for this purpose.No new positions or programs are being proposed.
Presentation and discussion on Rodeo Park Master Plan Alternatives.
Dean Chambers, Landscape Architect, Project Manager from J2 Engineering, presented
proposed Rodeo Park Master Plan which included Amphitheater, restroom/concession,
maintenance building, tractor museum, pull area and demonstration area, stables, two
arenas, vending areas, overnight accomodations, etc...Gary Mulholland expressed
concerns with location of restrooms in regards to use by youth groups and also explained
that the second arena could be half the size of the main arena good example to reference
would be Red Rock, Gallup N.M.
Ray DelZotto, explained with minor concerns, the next step is to prepare final
presentation with itemized budget and preliminary prioritization for review & input.
Gary Mulholland asked if there were other grant opportunities available and if Pinal
County has been approached in regards to the event center.
Mr. Bell relayed he is familiar with LWCF-Heritage Fund grants based on the scope of
work but, will certainly research.He further relayed the Pinal County is in the process of
hiring a Parks and Recreation Planner, this is a new position and we have not made
contact with the County at this time.
Discussion and update on the status of the lease application to the Bureau of Land
Management for 200 acre park site near Silly Mountain.
Mr. Bell relayed that we have received a 25 year lease for Silly Mountain Park. We had
proposed a more active park at the request of BLM but will be making adjustment with
community input, need and pending requests like BMX & Dog Park.The update to the
Five Year Plan will be helpful in this process.
NEW BUSINESS:
Presentation and discussion on proposed aquatics program for summer 2006.
Dan Wilson distributed Superstition Shadows Pool pamphlet which includes hours of
operation, daily fees, pool rental times and fees, and pool rules.He informed the
Commission that we are adding more swimming lessons in the evening, to keep kids safe
around water. We currently offer Learn to Swim classes for children 6 months of age to
Adult.We offer parent assisted classes and six levels of instruction as recommended by
the American Red Cross. We also offer Swim Team for those who have successfully
completed lessons. We are offering three sessions of Water Aerobics, incorporating
fitness into our aquatics program.On Friday evenings we will be hosting special events
like Family night, Teen night and My Bitty Beach Party.The first special event will be
held this Saturday, April 8th from 9 until noon, April Pools Day.This is a state-wide event
held in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety and Apache Junction Fire
Department.CPR & AED demonstrations will be held, home pool safety information will
be available, Dave Munsey, Channel 3, Keep your kids safe around water will be present
and the Water Wiz Kids.Everyone is invited down Free of charge.
Consideration of establishing new dates and times for the Parks and Recreation
Commission meetings.
The Commission did not feel the need to change date or time presently.
Request by the Commission for placement of items on future agenda.
FY 2006/07 Budget Discussion; Rodeo Park Master Plan; Volunteer Opportunities
Selection of next meeting date.

CALL TO PUBLIC:
Larry Stafford asked if BLM has to approve a new lease for the Rodeo Ground
Improvements.
Mr. Bell relayed that proposed and future improvements are provided for under our
current lease and are encouraged.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business, John Kantowski motioned to adjourn.Conrad Pisinski
seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
