Superstition Blvd. Apache Junction, Az. 85119 A regular meeting of the City of Apache Junction, Parks and Recreation Commission was held June 4, 2014 at the Apache Junction City Hall pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Present Absent . Theresa A. Nesser (Chairman)Mona Barton (Excused) Judy Borey Wayne Standage Jr. (Excused) Jesse Gage Jennifer McGraw Jeff Struble Staff Present: Jeff Bell, Parks and Recreation Director Liz Langenbach, Recreation Superintendent Nick Blake, Parks Superintendent Mary D. March, Administrative Assistant Others Present: Friends of Apache Junction Representatives Laura Dean Lytle and Ed Braunger. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Nesser called the meeting to order at 6103 p.m, and led the Commission in the Pledge of Allegiance. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA: Jennifer McGraw motioned to accept the agenda as presented. Jesse Gage seconded this motion, which passed unanimously. ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES: Jennifer McGraw motioned to accept the minutes of April 4, 2014 regular meeting.Jesse Gage seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director, Jeff Bell briefed the Commission on department activity as follows: Summer Activity listing was provided to Coramissic,ners. Prospector Park conversion of existing tennis cotirt into pickleball courts is complete and they are ready for use. Thanks was given to Nick Blake, Parks Superintendent for design of facility and overseeing the project. New mobile stage is to arrive mid -June, graphic design was provided for stage wrap.Further discussion included being tasked with whether or not to rent out this equipment and what that will entail.City Council discussed at their meeting last night along with advertising on City vehicles and fencing at Prospector Park and like facilities. Summer Aquatics has 391 participants enrolled in the first session of swimming lessons, with 932 enrolled in classes to date.We are averaging 551 swimmers per day which increases to 600 plus on the weeicends. Memorial Day saw 750 swimmers.Open Gym has 172 children enrolled in the 1st session. 220 children are involved in special interest classes such as karate, cooking, etc_ at this time. Nineteen pieces of new cardio-equipment has been installed and has been very appreciated by patrons at the Multi -generational Center. OLD BUSINESS: Update and discussion on intergovernmental agreement with Apache Junction Unified School District. Mr. Bell informed the Commission that School Board Member, Mike Weaver advised Councilman Chip Wilson, he was going to put the IGA on the school board agenda for termination and no more funding. Chip Wilson inquired about what was going on. This had been tabled but is back on the agenda for the next school board meeting. Chairman Nesser, asks what happens if they do not enter into an agreement related to the facility. Mr. Bell if we have no agreement we have no right to be on the property to operate the facility. NEW BUSINESS: Presentation of check by the Friends of Apache Junction. Mr. Bell shared with the Commission that it is a rare occasion when he receives a phone call that we are going to receive money and we can do whatever we want with it.That's exactly what happened, Roger Hacker called and advised the Friends of Apache Junction would like to donate funds raised at their Golf Tournament. Laura bean Lytle and Ed Braunger presented a check for $1,000.00, proceeds from Friends of Apache Junction fundraising Golf Tournament.Laura commented that P&R staff helped out immensely. Ed added the Parks and Recreation Department has always been a special part in his heart, he has always consider Parks and Recreation the crown jewel of the city.' Mr. Bell advised this will be put to good use the department's activity van was in need of a new wrap and this will pay for the new one which matches the stage. Consideration of proposal to dedicate the Apache Junction Rodeo Arena in memory of Gary Mulholland.(Public Hearing) Nick Blake advised that in line with the new park naming policy approved by the City Council last year, Superstition Mountain Promotional Corporation (SMPC) has submitted a proposal to dedicate the rodeo arena in memory of Gary Mulholland. The policy reads a portion of the facility can be dedicated to someone if the Commission and City Council feels it is justifiable. As a part of the process a proposal is required to be submitted with justification as to why the dedication should be considered, Nick read justification provided by SMPC, listing all the many contributions to youth organizations as a result of his 25 years of service as Lost Dutchman Days chairman.Gary's motto was "putting smiles on children's faces". Gary founded the SMPC and served as a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission in the mid 80's. The SMPC has provided the verbage to be placed on the plaque which will be 20" x14" and purchased by the SMPC. "Welcome to the House that Gary Built" Gary Mulholland 1947-2012 Founder Superstition Mountain Promotional Corporation Chairman of Lost Dutchman Days "Putting Smiles on Children's Faces" SMPC and staff both believe the best location to be the main entrance on the south side by the new stairway. We just relocated a flagpole to this location and the plaque would sit at the base of the flagpole on a raise platform.Staff is requesting approval of request from the Commission to the City Council. Chairman Nesser motioned to accept proposal to dedicate the Apache Junction Rodeo Arena in memory of Gary Mulholland with recommendation to the City Council for approval.Judy Borey seconded this motion which was unanimously approved. Request by the Commission for placement of items on future agenda. Intergovernmental Agreement with Apache Junction Unified School District; Review of facility fees. Selection of next meeting date. August 6, 2014 or as needed. CALL TO PUBLIC: None ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, Chairman Nesser adjourned the meeting at 6:34 p.m. Vice -Chairman
