Chairperson Standage called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm.

Parks and Recreation Director's Report
Liz Langenbach provided the commission with the fall edition of the Citizen Brochure and list of
volunteer opportunities.
Advised the Commission Proposition 423 the permanent base adjustment passed with flying
colors, 72% of the vote.Further advised we have three commission terms expiring on October
31st, Wayne Standage, Frank Schoenbeck and Theresa Nesser. Anyone interested will need to
complete an application and interviews will be conducted beginning of October.
Liz Langenbach introduced Recreation Superintendent Jamie Sullivan and Recreation
Coordinator John "JJ" Underwood to update the Commission on Senior Services.
Jamie Sullivan advised the Commission that we do not like to compare numbers with previous
year because of difference in accounting. This will serve as our first year for future comparison.
*Commissioner Schoenbeck was excused from the meeting due to a family emergency.
JJ Underwood advised the Commission that we have served 850 unique members to date.
Participant numbers include 7,576 individuals in recreational, social & fitness activities, 10,527
individuals served congregate meals, 7,719 home delivered meals, 4,111 one way trips to MGC
and shopping and 20 one way trips for recently started ride reimbursement program for medical
and shopping purposes available to Apache Junction residents.
Activities provided include Pokeno, Mahjong, Bingo, Pinochle, Dominoes, Bridge, crochet,
knitting, arts, crafting, shopping, music, line dancing, fitness, treadmills, lunch, parties, legal aid
and benefits. Favorites are Bingo, Pokeno, Bridge and Mahjong.Largest event is the Mother's
Day Tea held annually in May. Event is sold out every year. Includes musical entertainment,
prizes, light lunch and tea.
Meals are served Monday through Friday no holidays, cooked fresh daily on site, contracted
with Bateman's.Five to seven frozen meals are delivered to individual's homes once weekly.
Birthday and holiday celebration are held monthly. Musical entertainment and speaker provided
weekly, senior café provide in morning during activities and the Police Chief attends lunch.
Transportation is contracted locally with CACDD.They were already established and kept
current driver. Initially had to reduce transportation to center only. Due to Gila River Indian
Community funding we were able to provide weekly shopping trips and rider reimbursements.
Revenue sources include grants, Pinal Gila Council for Senior Citizens (AAA) and participant
donations. Expenses for congregate, home delivered meals and transportation are provided to
date.
Old Business
18-377 Update on active transportation plan
Liz Langenbach advised, the city received a grant for implementation of an Active
Transportation Plan, which includes all modes of transportation, in our community. J2
Engineering & Design Services has been contracted to research and conduct public meetings
for community input. A meeting is scheduled September 12th from 6pm-8pm at the
Multigenerational Center, for presentation of their preliminary findings. Planning and Zoning and
the Parks and Recreation Commission will have two joint public meeting, October 9, 2018 and
January 8, 2019.
New Business
18-3782020 General Plan and Discussion
Liz Langenbach relayed kickoff meeting with city department heads are being scheduled this
week to start the process of updated our general plan.These meetings will include inventory of
what is current, estimated population projections, short term, mid-term and long term
assessments, lots of staff led research to share with boards and commissions for input and
change to fit needs of our community and future growth.
18-379 Dog Park Discussion
Liz Langenbach advised the commission, direction has been received from the city council to
research the community need related to off leash dog parks and to provide a recommendation
to the city council to include best locations, short term and long term projects, construction and
maintenance costs and potential funding sources. We have plans for million dollar dog parks but
nothing that serves the immediate need.
