Call to Order Chairperson Standage called the regular meeting of the City of Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. Pledge of Allegiance Chairperson Standage led the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. Roll Call Present 5- Chairperson Standage, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Vice Chair Borey, Commissioner Kyhn, and Chairperson Moore Excused 1 - Commissioner Moeller Absent 1 - Commissioner Buzzin Staff present: Liz Langenbach, Parks and Recreation Director Larry Binion, Recreation Facilities Manager Kelly Martin, Park Ranger Supervisor Carol Otto, Parks and Recreation Administrative Assistant 4. Consent Agenda Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck moved that the Parks and Recreation Commission accept the agenda as presented and approve the minutes from the May 4,2022 regular meeting. Commissioner Terralle Moore seconded the motion. Yes: 5- Chairperson Standage, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Vice Chair Borey, Commissioner Kyhn and Chairperson Moore No: 0 Excused: 1 - Commissioner Moeller Absent: 1 - Commissioner Buzzin 22-328 Consideration of approval of agenda. City of Apache Junction,Arizona Pagel Parks& Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes June 1,2022 22-329 Consideration of approval of regular meeting minutes of May 4, 2022. Attachments: PR 050422 Meeting Minutes 5. Information and Reports Vice Chair Judy Borey shared about the Shop Local cards that are available. Several commissioners shared their completed rock art projects. Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck made positive comments regarding the opening of the Dutchman Dog Park. 6. Staff Report 22-330 Presentation and discussion on projects and opportunities in the parks and other service areas. Director Langenbach gave a recap on Dutchman Dog Park. She gave an update on the HVAC for the Multi-Gen Center as well as the large animal shelter at the Rodeo grounds. 22-338 Presentation, discussion and update on upcoming events and activities. Director Langenbach thanked commissioners that completed their rock art project and then gave an update on the fireworks display for the 4th of July celebration and the change of viewing location. 22-331 Presentation and discussion by Larry Binion regarding operations and programs of Superstition Shadows Aquatics Center, as well as the operations of the Multi-Generational Center. Director Langenbach reviewed the Parks and Recreation contact list if anyone from the public needs to contact someone. She then introduced Larry Binion, the Recreation Facilities Manager, who oversees both the Multi Gen Center and the Aquatics Center. He gave a short presentation focusing on the MGC services, ammenities, and atmosphere. He reviewed many of the programs and classes offered and communicated about the wonderful staff working there. 22-332 Presentation and discussion by Kelly Martin regarding the Park Ranger Programs. Director Langenbach introduced Park Ranger Supervisor, Kelly Martin, who gave an overview of his history with the Park Ranger Program and an extensive history of the program itself. He proudly noted that other cities have modeled their Park Ranger Program after ours and how he personally has been invited to other towns to assist them in building their programs. He also reviewed the Park Attendant portion of the program, as well his other duties and the importance of these roles to both our staff, the families visiting our playgrounds, and the community at large. 7. Old Business 22-333 Update and discussion of Dutchman Dog Park donor opportunities. Director Langenbach shared for Dutchman Dog Park donor opportunities and gave an update on various offerings. She also shared some conceptual ideas via a visual presentation as well as the place to find answers to frequently asked questions. She noted that the Corporate Partnership program is still active and some people are contacting us regarding smaller sponsorship items. City or Apache Junction,Arizona page 2 Parks&Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes June 1,2022 22-334 Presentation and discussion of community survey questions for the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan A presentation was made by Director Langenbach regarding community feedback within the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan. One aspect of this is will be in the form of a survey in which the public can answer specific questions to guide us with some of the decisions in finalizing this Plan. She reviewed some of the categories which will be covered and also some potential questions to find out specifically what people want for themselves and their families. 8. New Business 22-335 Discussion regarding the dedication of the Prospector Park Softball Complex in memory of former Parks and Recreation Director, Jeff Bell. Attachments: Park Naming Policy A handout entitled Parks, Areas, and Facilities Naming/Dedication Policy was reviewed by the commission while Director Langenbach spoke regarding the dedication of the Prospector Park Softball Complex in memory of former Parks and Recreation Director, Jeff Bell. She shared some accomplishments of Mr. Bell and gave an overview of the policy and requested feedback on honoring him and his legacy with an interpretive display. Vice Chair Borey, Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck, and Chair Standage shared their thoughts. Director Langenbach intends on finding historical video and sharing it with the commission to see some ideas that Jeff had about naming a facility. First and foremost we will consider this dedication for the fall and perhaps at a later time we can review the policy to make potential changes. 22-336 Discussion on engaging new community members. Commissioner Schoenbeck introduced discussion on engaging new community members that move into the area. He shared how people form habits and what can we do to get people to come to the Multi-Generational Center as well as the Library and also begin shopping within our city. We might engage the Chamber of Commerce to attract people to this part of town. Director Langenbach asked for input from Larry Binion who shared that the developers and home builders who have used welcome baskets to reach new community members with information about what we offer.Vice Chair Borey and Chair Standage added to the discussion. 9. Call to Public None. 10. Call for Future Agenda Items Commissioner Schoenbeck asked about our next big project and Director Langenbach replied that we will report back on baskets from the Developers to new community members. 11. Selection of Meeting Dates, Times, Location and Purpose 22-337 Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission to be held at 6:00 p.m.on July 6, 2022 in the city council chambers located at 300 E. Superstition Boulevard. Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck moved seconded by Vice Chair Judy Borey that the regular session of the Parks and Recreation Commission be held July 6,2022 at 6:00 p.m.in the city council chambers located at 300 E.Superstition Boulevard,Apache Junction.
