1. Call to Order
Chair Heather Moeller called the regular meeting of the City of Apache Junction Parks and
Recreation Commission to order at 6:00 p.m.
2. Pledge of Allegiance
Chair Heather Moeller led in the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. Roll Call
Present 6- Chairperson Moeller,Vice Chair Bigelow, Commissioner Schoenbeck,
Commissioner Borey, Commissioner Moore,and Commissioner Madrid

4. Consent Agenda
Vice Chair Sheryl Bigelow moved that the Parks and Recreation Commission accept the agenda
as presented and approve the minutes from the May 1,2024 regular meeting.Commissioner
Terralle Moore seconded the motion.This was approved.

5. Information and Reports
Several commissioners shared positive comments about the events that they attended.
Commissioners were impressed with the fitness classes offered at the Multi-Generational
Center and at the Superstition Shadows Aquatics Center.
6. Staff Report
24-451 Presentation and update on projects and opportunities in the parks and other
service areas.
Parks Superintendent Dave Butler updated the commission on recently completed projects. He
shared that the boiler was replaced at the Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center and the new
artificial turf was installed. He also shared that the new construction trailer and fenced
equipment yard at Superstition Shadows Park is in place to provide office space and needed
equipment storage. Other updates were provided on the current curbing project at Prospector
Park to control water runoff along with the new restroom installation. He noted upcoming
projects include the Multi-Generational Center flooring replacement and the future installation of
additional pickleball courts at Prospector Park. He also gave a brief update on the tentative
opening date of Painted Sky Park and also noted that council adopted the Rodeo Grounds
Master Plan last month which allows for the move into the design stage.All questions asked
from the commission were answered.
24-467 Introduction of new Parks Maintenance Supervisors, Shawna Hash and Josh
Vega.
Parks Superintendent Dave Butler introduced the two new parks supervisors for the North and
South teams. Each supervisor had an opportunity to speak to the commission and answer
questions about themselves. Shawna Hash shared her certifications and is looking forward to
the new pickleball courts at Prospector Park. Josh shared his long tenure with the department
and is most proud of the Dutchman Dog Park project.
24-452 Presentation, discussion and update on upcoming events and activities.
Recreation Superintendent Jamie Sullivan updated the commission on recent and upcoming
events and activities. She announced the Mother's Day Tea event completely sold out and
patron counts were at a record high for the pool opening weekend. She also mentioned a recent
donation was received from the Apache Junction Eagles for youth programs along with a
partnership with Sonic to recognize outstanding part-time staff members. She concluded by
sharing that the Dutchman Dog Park is officially open for online registrations.
7. Old Business
24-453 Discussion and update on amenities, rules, and features at Painted Sky Park
in Blossom Rock.
Director Liz Langenbach updated the commission on the current park rules and gave
commissioners copies of what is currently posted at the parks. She mentioned the park rules
posted at Painted Sky Park will be very similar to the existing rules and there will be no changes
or updates at this time. Since there is a brand new lake amenity, Director Langenbach shared
that there will be some signage relating to rules and directions because the lake will allow for
catch and release fishing. She mentioned that amendments, additions, or changes to park rules

could come in the future as needs arise.
8. New Business

Presentation and update on the Multi-Generational Center programs,
operations, and services by Facility Manager, Larry Binion.
Multi-Generational Center Facility Manager Larry Binion presented the commission with updates
on the MGC's increase in revenues and visits compared to last fiscal year. He shared featured
amenities, new programs and events, and announced that the new fitness deck is available for
future reservations. He noted that next year the MGC will be 20 years old.All questions and
comments made by the commissioners were answered and noted.
9. Call to Public

10. Call for Future Agenda Items
Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck requested information on the Public Works Superstition
Basin project and requested a discussion about activities that can be done at the lake in Painted
Sky Park at Blossom Rock. Commissioner Judy Borey requested an update on the buffelgrass
project. Commissioner Felicia Madrid asked for the status of the restrooms at Superstition
Shadows Park. Director Liz Langenbach noted that the next commission meeting will include
information about the fiscal year 24/25 budget and the Strategic Plan to address some of the
commissioner's questions.
11. Selection of Meeting Dates, Times, Location and Purpose
24-456 Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission to be held at 6:00
p.m. on August 7, 2024 in the city council chambers located at 300 E.
Superstition Boulevard.
Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck moved,seconded by Commissioner Terralle Moore that the
regular session of the Parks and Recreation Commission be held August 7,2024 at 6:00 p.m.in the
city council chambers located at 300 E Superstition Boulevard,Apache Junction.This was
approved.
