Wednesday, September 4, 2024 6:00 PM City Council Chambers 1. Call to Order Vice Chair Sheryl Bigelow called the regular meeting of the City of Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. Pledge of Allegiance Vice Chair Sheryl Bigelow led in the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. Roll Call Present 6- Vice Chair Bigelow, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Commissioner Borey, Commissioner Kyhn, Commissioner Moore, and Commissioner Madrid Excused 1 - Chairperson Moeller Staff present: Liz Langenbach, Parks and Recreation Director Jamie Sullivan, Recreation Superintendent Riley King, Management Analyst Christi Hamm, Senior Administrative Assistant 4. Consent Agenda Commissioner Terralle Moore moved that the Parks and Recreation Commission accept the agenda as presented and approve the minutes from the August 7, 2024 regular meeting. Commissioner Felicia Madrid seconded the motion.This was approved. Yes: 6- Vice Chair Bigelow, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Commissioner Borey, Commissioner Kyhn, Commissioner Moore and Commissioner Madrid No: 0 Excused: 1 - Chairperson Moeller 24-697 Consideration of approval of agenda. 24-699 Consideration of approval of regular meeting minutes of August 7, 2024. Information and Reports City of Apache Junction,Arizona page f Parks& Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes September 4, 2024 Several commissioners made positive comments about events they attended including the Last Splash, the Garden Party and the Painted Sky Park ribbon cutting. Commissioner Terralle Moore gave a brief update on the Art Commission's selection process for the Multi-Generational Center's window. 6. Staff Report 24-700 Presentation and update on projects and opportunities in the parks and other service areas. Director Liz Langenbach briefed the commission on the Painted Sky Park soft opening ribbon cutting and announced the future grand opening date will be November 2, 2024. She noted upcoming overseeding at the ballfields, City Hall Complex Park, Flatiron Park and there will be entrance modifications at the Dutchman Dog Park. She concluded with updates on the future pickleball courts and the Rodeo Grounds design phases will be going to council. 24-701 Presentation, discussion and update on upcoming events and activities. Recreation Superintendent Jamie Sullivan updated the commission on the successful turnouts at Saturday swim lessons, Fairytale Fair, and Family Bingo Night. She announced upcoming events and asked for volunteers for the Mad Science event. 24-706 Presentation on Arizona Parks and Recreation Association awards. Recreation Superintendent Jamie Sullivan shared videos of the department's Arizona Parks and Recreation Association winners from this year's APRA Conference. Gary Gartner took home the award for an Outstanding Sports Program and Riley King received the Young Professional award. 7. Old Business 24-702 Update and discussion on Tree City USA. Director Liz Langenbach gave a brief overview of the Tree City USA program and the requirements of the department to maintain the status. She shared with the commission the point system and discussed the categories where the department can earn points. She mentioned that the department has earned enough points already for the upcoming submission deadline. All questions and comments from the commission were answered and noted. 24-703 Presentation and discussion on update to the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan. Management Analyst Riley King shared the strategic plan and pointed out several items that would be addressed and changed such as pictures, the organizational chart, maps and more. Many commissioners expressed ideas for parks, programming for special interest, additional outdoor recreation, senior services, and youth engagement. 8. New Business 24-704 Discussion on the America 250 Events with staff and representatives from the Apache Traii Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Vice Chair Sheryl Bigelow called attention to this New Business item number 24-704 for presentation before Old Business numbers 24-702 and 24-703 listed on the agenda. City of Apache Junction,Arizona Page 2 Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes September 4, 2024 Recreation Superintendent Jamie Sullivan introduced representatives Anne and Kelly from the Apache Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She mentioned they will collaborate with the department to enhance the existing 4th of July event along with facilitating their semiquincentennial celebrations. Both representatives spoke to the commission and provided information about their role in helping promote the community's involvement in America 250 in 2026. All questions from the commissioners were answered and noted. 9. Call to Public None. 10. Call for Future Agenda items 11. Selection of Meeting Dates, Times, Location and Purpose 24-705 Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission to be held at 6:00 p.m. on October 2, 2024 in the city council chambers located at 300 E. Superstition Boulevard. Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck moved, seconded by Commissioner Terralle Moore that the regular session of the Parks and Recreation Commission be held October 2,2024 at 6:00 p.m. in the city council chambers located at 300 E Superstition Boulevard, Apache Junction.This was approved. Yes: 6- Vice Chair Bigelow, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Commissioner Borey, Commissioner Kyhn, Commissioner Moore and Commissioner Madrid No: 0 Excused: 1 - Chairperson Moeller 12.
