Wednesday,October 2, 2024 6:00 PM City Council Chambers 1. Call to Order Chair Heather Moeller called the regular meeting of the City of Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. Pledge of Allegiance Chair Heather Moeller led in the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. Roll Call Present 5- Chairperson Moeller, Vice Chair Bigelow, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Commissioner Borey, and Commissioner Moore Excused 2- Commissioner Kyhn, and Commissioner Madrid Staff present: Jamie Sullivan, Recreation Superintendent Dave Butler, Parks Superintendent Riley King, Management Analyst Christi Hamm, Senior Administrative Assistant 4. Consent Agenda Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck moved that the Parks and Recreation Commission accept the agenda as presented and approve the minutes from the September 4, 2024 regular meeting. Commissioner Terralle Moore seconded the motion.This was approved. Yes: 5- Chairperson Moeller, Vice Chair Bigelow, Commissioner Schoenbeck, Commissioner Borey and Commissioner Moore No: 0 Excused: 2- Commissioner Kyhn and Commissioner Madrid 24-790 Consideration of approval of agenda. 24-791 Consideration of approval of regular meeting minutes of September 4, 2024. Information and Reports City of Apache Junction,Arizona Page 1 Parks&Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes October 2,2024 A number of commissioners made positive comments about the events they attended. Several commissioners shared their excitement about upcoming events and activities scheduled on the fall calendar and for the month of October. 6. Staff Report 24-792 Presentation and update on projects and opportunities in the parks and other service areas. Parks Superintendent Dave Butler gave an update on current and upcoming projects in the parks. He mentioned overseeding is still planned however, they are attempting to extend it out further due to the unusually high temperatures in October, but Flatiron is first on the list. He mentioned other current projects such as the Superstition Shadows lighting updates and the expanded ADA entrance to the Dutchman Dog Park. In addition, he presented the design renderings of the new pickleball courts for Prospector Park. All questions from the commissioners were answered. 24-793 Presentation, discussion and update on upcoming events and activities. Recreation Superintendent Jamie Sullivan briefed the commission on the recent events, highlighting the impressive turnout for the Mad Science event. Additionally she presented the October event schedule along with the fall calendar of events and activities. She announced exciting new programs including evening line dancing classes, Paint and Pints at the Cat Wagon, and the grand opening of Painted Sky Park set for November 2, 2024. She concluded by announcing recent staff changes for Larry Binion who is the new Management Analyst and JJ Underwood is now the new Facilities Manager. 7. Old Business 24-794 Presentation and discussion on update to the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan. Attachments: Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan- Draft Management Analyst Riley King presented the updated draft of the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan that incorporated feedback from the last commission meeting. Commissioners were provided opportunities to ask questions throughout and share their preference for the cover photo. All of the commissioner's questions and comments were addressed and duly noted. 8. New Business 9. Call to Public None. 10. Call for Future Agenda Items Vice Chair Sheryl Bigelow requested more information on the welcome bags. Commissioner Terralle Moore requested an update on the art commission's selection for the Multi-Generational Center's window. 11. Superstition Boulevard. Vice Chair Sheryl Bigelow moved,seconded by Commissioner Judy Borey that the regular session of the Parks and Recreation Commission be held November 6, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. in the city council chambers located at 300 E.Superstition Blvd,Apache Junction.This was approved. 12.
