Commissioners Terralle Moore, Frank Shoenbeck, and Vice Chair Judy Borey all made positive comments regarding Bingo Night, MGC, the Dog Park, and staff flyers respectively. Staff Report6. 22-555 Presentation and discussion on projects and opportunities in the parks and other service areas. Director Liz Langenbach gave updates on the fitness equipment for the MGC, tennis court renovation at Superstition Shadows Park, Dutchman Dog Park, and Prospector Park. 22-556 Presentation, discussion and update on upcoming events and activities . Recreation Coordinator, JJ Underwood, offered a presentation and update regarding the Recreation activities, classes and events, which include upcoming swim lessons, archery classes, T-ball, and flag football. He noted that the Halloween event will include some fun activities and also that it will be moved to Superstition Shadows Park this year. 22-557 Presentation and discussion by Jared Grimm, Recreation Coordinator, regarding Special Events and Special Projects. Jared Grimm, Recreation Coordinator for Special Events and Special Projects, gave a presentation on his program area which includes the July 4th event, the large upcoming Halloween and Holiday events, as well as a preview of the Easter Egg Hunt in April. Many of the smaller events, including concerts and movies, were also shared. Special Projects were also covered, including the new city service sign and Make a Difference Day in October. 22-559 Presentation and discussion by Matt King, Park Maintenance Supervisor for the North Team. Park Maintenance Supervisor, Matt King, gave a presentation regarding the North Team and the work that is done by them. He gave an overview of Prospector Park, the Rodeo Event Center, and Silly Mountain Park and the staff needed to maintain these areas, as well as the City Hall Complex and the work his team does there. His team also provides assistance to programs and special events regularly. Old Business7. None. New Business8. 22-560 Presentation by Bill Donato, Urban Forestry Environmental Education Assistant from the Arizona Sustainability Alliance, and Megan Lasley, Conservation Education Coordinator for Urban and Community Forestry, Department of Forestry and Fire Management, regarding the benefits of Tree City USA designation. Presentation made by Megan Lasley, Conservation Education Coordinator for Urban and Community Forestry, Department of Forestry and Fire Management, regarding the benefits of obtaining the Tree City USA designation for the City of Apache Junction. She included the standards and steps to obtain designation as well as the benefits. Bill Donato, the Urban Forestry Environmental Education Assistant from the Arizona Sustainability Alliance, also shared about the emotional benefits of trees and shared that Apache Junction would be a great Tree City USA city. Director Liz Langenbach asked the board about their interest level in this program and there was unanimous agreement that more discussion on this matter would be beneficial. 22-561 Update on the moving of the Parks and Recreation Administration offices and storage. Director Liz Langenbach gave an update on the plan to move the Parks and Recreation Administrative offices and storage to the north side of the Multi Generational Center next year. She shared that the city council has approved an architect for this project. Vice Chair Borey requested updates as time goes on. Call to Public9. Call for Future Agenda Items10. Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck requested Tree City USA be placed on a future agenda, and Director Langenbach requested the Strategic Plan be an agenda item in November. Commissioner Frank Schoenbeck moved and seconded by Commissioner Lucian Buzzin that the regular session of the Parks and Recreation Commission be held October 5, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. in the city council chambers located at 300 E. Superstition Boulevard, Apache Junction. This was approved. Superstition Blvd. • APACHE JUNCTION, AZ 85119 • PHONE (480) 983-2181 • FAX (480) 982-2438 • TDD (480) 983-0095 City of Apache Junction Home of the Superstition Mountains MEMORANDUM TO: The Parks & Recreation Commission FROM: Liz Langenbach, Parks and Recreation Director DATE: October 5, 2022 SUBJECT: Staff Update on Development of the CAP Trail Staff will discuss and present updates on the joint efforts between the City, Pinal County, and the Town of Florence for the development of the CAP National Recreation Trail (CAP Trail). The CAP Trail, following the Central Arizona Project canal, was master planned in 2015 and meets goals identified in both the city’s Active Transportation Plan and 2020 General Plan. Phase 3 consists of approximately 39.8 miles of trail from Florence to Apache Junction. Apache Junction’s portion is approximately 6.93 miles. The partners have been meeting for over a year with landowners/stakeholders to review the 2015 Plan, and hear of any changes or concerns. The next steps will include beginning the environmental clearances and design of the trail. Costs will be allocated to the Partners based on the percentage of trail miles within their respective boundaries upon execution of this agreement. (Costs for Apache Junction shall not exceed $45,000 for the design portion of the partnership) Future construction and operation/maintenance will be determined once design has completed. Multiple funding sources will be considered by the Partners for construction of the trail, including grants and sponsorships.
