5. Old Business:
a. Discussion on Home Rule strategies to
inform the public:
Work is proceeding on the Book Worm
concept.
John Schoeph met with Gary Nine about
the 7th graders participation in the Essay
Contest being held to promote the
library.Gary estimates that 60-70%of
nearly 400 7th grade children do not use
the library. He suggested a video tape be
recorded for children and teens to view
to see what the library has to offer them,
then follow up with a one hour tour.
The school system would bus 30 students
at a time to the library. The students
would then write essays after viewing the
video and taking the tour.March and
April would be possible months to do
this.It was suggested that children can
also enter the "Kids Connect at the
Library" contest sponsored by American
Library Association and Suave.
Committee needs the next calendar to
update brochures.
John Schoeph expressed his view that as
individuals in the community, Board
members could educate those we come
in contact with about the Home Rule
issue.Official publicity pamphlets will
be distributed at the Library to help
inform the public.

was sponsored by the Department of
Library, Archives and Public Records for
Library Board and "Friends of the
Library" members.Jack Short, a person
who has devoted much of his life to
volunteering on behalf of libraries as both
a Board member and a Friend, gave a
very informative talk.He encouraged
Board members to be more responsive to
raising funds in light of less federal and
state funding being granted to libraries.
He suggested seeking out bequests and
establishing an endowment for the local
library.He also encouraged Board
members to become Friend of the
Library. One idea offered was to use
something like a "Welcome Wagon" to
introduce newcomers to Friends of the
Library and the library's services.
Ed Namsick asked if one week would
be enough time for the essay contest and
would this be an assignment for the
7th graders?
Continuing education.
