Idaho Road Regular Meeting May 5, 1998 A regular meeting of the Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees was held May 5, 1998 at 6:05 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Gardner, Barbara Griffing, Kendra Nolan, Peter Poteet, Joyce Rineholt, Pamela Schoeph, John Absent Little, Millie Staff: Pamela Loui, Library Director Elizabeth Burks, Youth Services Librarian 1. Acceptance of Agenda: 2. Acceptance of minutes for April 7, 1998 Regular Meeting: Motion was made by Barbara Gardner and seconded by Kendra Griffing to accept the agenda. Motion passed unanimously. Motion was made by Kendra Griffing and seconded by Barbara Gardner to accept the minutes for the April 7, 1998 Regular Meeting with the following corrections: Item #6 -"d" removed from the word "required" and item #7c -spelling of Mountain Brook checked and corrected if necessary. Community Relations Committee 5. Librarian's Report: 6. Old Business: a. Update of library budget request for 1998/99: None. Millie Little and Joyce Poteet attended a town hall meeting at Thunder Mountain Middle School.They discussed library services and distributed brochures to the attendees. Statistics are up compared to the same month a year ago.Storyhours, school visits and computer classes continued through the month.During National Library week the library hosted a puppet show.Many new books have been added and we continue to delete long overdue items. According to the quarterly reference survey we were very busy. The budget was turned in on time and is being reviewed by the city management. Pam Loui reviewed the budget proposal with the board and explained some of the expected expenditures.Motion was made by John Schoeph and seconded by Joyce Poteet that the Board recommends the acceptance of the budget proposal as outlined.It was passed unanimously in a roll call vote by those present. b. Continuing discussion on Computer use policy:House Bill 2455 has been passed by the Senate and is going back to the House City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting May 5, 1998 Page 3 c. Update on FOL Endowment fund: d. Update on US WEST Foundation Grant Classes: for acceptance of changes.AzLA has opposed the bill. The contacts have been expanded to 47. Of the letters sent there were 27 who did not respond, 12 responded no and 8 responded yes.The total donated so far is $1550.00.The committee has begun to contact large businesses in the area. During the month of April there were 20 classes with 101 participants.The demand remains strong and there is a waiting list for the classes. e. Report on the Dynix System upgrade to 171:There is one test station up for Pac for Windows.Pamela Loui encouraged the board members to try the station and give feedback to her. f. Reminder of terms to expire: 7. New Business: a.Discussion of a Competition for Jr. high students: Pamela Loui contacted those members whose terms will expire.Of the three contacted, two of those wish to be considered for re -appointment. Youth Services Librarian Elizabeth Burks discussed what types of problems had been encountered in previous competitions and discussed some possibilities suggested by the Teen Advisor Board.It was decided that it is too late for a competition this year, but to consider it next year. Adjournment: President - President Secretary Youth Services Librarian Elizabeth Burks handed out flyers with information about the "Readers of the Round Table" summer reading program.The kick off date will be May 26 th with a variety of activities and a Medieval Fair.The library has received donations from area businesses to use as prizes.The program will involve students through high school.Summer movies are scheduled weekly at two locations.Teens will be offering tutoring.The summer storytime will be open to patrons on a drop -in basis.
