August 1, 2000
A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was
held August 1, 2000 at 6:00 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as
prescribed by law.

Barbara Gardner reported that she and
Theresa Nesser attended the July 31st
Council work session for the discussion

5.Librarian's Report:
on "Open Meeting Law".Joel Stern,
Apache Junction City Attorney, made
the presentation.Barbara distributed a
handout containing "Overview of
Arizona Open Meeting Law",
"Overview of Arizona Conflicts of
Interest Law", a copy of Senate Bill
1392, and a registration form for the
"Open Meeting Law Reform Act of
2000: Sharpening the Sword and
Strengthening the Shield" seminar.
Barbara stated that the City was covering
the expense if any Board Member
wanted to attend and members should
contact Pamela Loui concerning this.
Pamela Loui reported that book
circulation was up in July.The
audiotape and videocassette circulation
was also up from last year.Patron visits
were up and there were 289 new adult
patrons registered and 180 new juvenile
patrons registered.700 titles were added
to the collection, as were 58
audiocassettes and 172 videocassettes.
The Library continues to add to the
government documents.732 outdated
and worn books and 41 worn
audiocassettes were withdrawn from the
collection.Volunteer hours were at
638.5 and there were 41 literacy student
visits with 97 student hours.
A Library Team party was held with 22
attending.One TAB meeting had 9 in
attendance.There was one game day
and 22 participated.11 computer classes
were given with 67 attending.

a.Update of Library Budget request for
2000/01:

Vacancies:
There was one Public Access Catalog
Class and only one person attended.
Pamela stated that this class is more
popular in the winter.There were four
writers club sessions and 24 attended
these.
Pamela also reported that the Library
was approved for a grant, by the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation, to receive
four new computer workstations and one
server.These new computers will be
part of the Library's Computer Lab but
will not be used to access the
DestinationsTM program.
Pamela Loui reported that the tentative
budget had already been adopted by the
Council.The Council increased the
Library's budget for books and
audio/visual materials.A one-half time
Library Clerk I position will be added
and the one -halftime Secretary position
will be increased to a three -quarter -time
position.Pamela stated that the final
budget adoption is scheduled for
tonight's Council meeting.
Pamela Loui reported that two applicants
have already been interviewed for the
two vacant positions on the Library
Board.
Barbara Gardner stated that the Board
appointments were on the agenda for
tonight's Council meeting.

Elizabeth Burks, Youth Services
Librarian, reported that the Library's
Summer Reading Program ended on
Saturday, July 29 th, and was a great
success.1,350 younger participants
registered and this was a 37% increase
over the 1999 program.334 participants
finished the entire program.This is
approximately 25% of those registered.
167 registered for the Young Adult
Program.This is a 53% increase over
last year.Of those young adults
registered, 45% completed the program.
Barbara Gardner asked if Board
members wished to table this item until
September, when there could be a full
Board.Andrea HinIcel motioned to table
this item until the September meeting.
Theresa Nesser seconded the motion.A
roll call vote was taken and all members
present voted in favor.This item is
tabled until September 5, 2000.

Election of Library Board officers.
