Idaho Road Apache Junction, AZ 85219 Regular Meeting November 7, 2000 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held November 7, 2000 at 6:05 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Absent Foat, Virginia Gardiner, Scott Gardner, Barbara Hinkel, Andrea Mueting, Barbara Nesser, Theresa Staff: Pamela Loui, Library Director 1. Acceptance of Agenda: 2. Correspondence and Communications: Kimball -Wright, Beverly The question of accepting the agenda was placed before the Board and was accepted by general consent. Andrea Hinkel passed around a copy of the Library Board's letter to the City Council showing their support of the capital fundraising campaign planned by the Friends of the Library.She also passed a copy of the letter from the Library Board to the Friends of the City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting November 7, 2000 Page 2 4.Librarian's Report: Library, showing support of their fundraising efforts. Pamela Loui reported working with the Friends of the Library and went with Linda Overacker to the high school.An advanced computer class will be designing web pages for Cactus On Parade.At the end of the semester a Friends of the Library committee will select the three web sites that would best represent the project and the Friends of the Library would sponsor those web sites on the Internet, hoping to attract attention to the project.Pam stated that they are still trying to get a facilitator or consultant to help get the plan together. Linda feels confident and is going ahead with some of the preliminary things for Cactus On Parade.The Council heard the Cactus On Parade presentation and was favorable to it.The resolution for the Friends of the Library Capital Campaign and the approval for the Food For Fines will be on the Council's consent agenda tonight. Book circulation has increased over the past year, as did the audiotapes, videocassettes, and in-house computer use.Patron visits have increased over last year.The library continues to add to the collections and continues the weeding process.Volunteer hours were at 305.7.Programs included 8 regular storytimes with 185 attending, 4 babytime storytimes with 57 attending and 4 school visits with 156 participating.One Teen Book Discussion Group was held with 5 City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting November 7, 2000 Page 3 5.Old Business 6.New Business a.Teen Advisory Board annual report to the Library Board of Trustees: participating.There were 18 computer classes with 116 attending and 2 public access catalog classes with 7 attending. The literacy program had 26 student visits with 60 hours.The Reference Desk received 529 requests for the week and 339 requests were completed on the same day.Of the 529 total requests, 109 were on-line searches. Pamela stated that a Christmas Program would be held at the Library at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on December 1, 2000. The name is Entertainment, Inc., a barbershop quartet, and they will do Christmas and barbershop favorites. None. Elizabeth Burks, Youth Services Librarian, introduced Phillip Pace, President of the Teen Advisory Board. Phillip reported that there were sixteen teens from middle school and high school that volunteer to be on the Teen Advisory Board and that is one of the largest groups they have had. Phillip stated that the board's activities for the last few months included a Teen Chat Café that was held a few weeks ago and went very well.Florence Community Library was invited to attend and their youth group got to meet our Teen Advisory Board.A Mystery Game party and a Game Day were held and the teens brought in board games City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting November 7, 2000 Page 4 b.Discussion on computer classes being More approachable for people over 60: and video games to play.The Game Day was the largest program and a lot of the teens want to do it again.Several Book Discussion Groups were held. This group meets every month for an hour discussion.He also reported that the Teen Advisory Board has put together a newsletter that goes out to all TAB members and is available for anyone in the community. Plans for a Christmas play or puppet show for children are being worked on at this time.The Teen Advisory Board is considering having a fourth Teen Chat Café.The group is also planning to have a float in the Lost Dutchman Days parade. Scott Gardiner reported that he was approached by several seniors who commented on how they felt about the computer training at the Library. One man had difficulty using the PAC computer and was too embarrassed to ask a library staff member for help. Two women were reluctant to take the computer training. People tend to forget what they learned and do not want to take the class a second time. Pamela Loui reported that 90% - 95% of the students in the computer classes fall into the senior category and the City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting November 7, 2000 Page 5 c.Discussion on Library Legislative Day, January 25, 2001 and involvement of Library Board members in it: evaluations turned in by them were very positive. Scott suggested that reference cards be placed next to the PACs so patrons could see, step-by-step, how to operate the computers to find what they want.All members agreed to this action. Some other suggestions were that more publicity be given on the availability of the computers, give library tours to the senior population, and create a video showing the computer classes in progress. Pamela Loui stated that the Library Legislative Day was on Thursday, January 25, 2001, at the State Capitol.If the same program as last year is followed there will be a reception in the morning with refreshments.Legislators will be invited to come and mingle with the library staff, board members and Friends members.Then there will be a number of speakers.In late morning there will be an opportunity to go to the Representatives from your area to present the important issues of the library.Last year there was the request for the State to increase their State Grants In Aid.Even though last year was a non -funding year, they were still able to get it passed and got some dollars assigned to it.This year is a funding year and they are going back and asking for $1 million.The more we can get the State to increase its funds to libraries the City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting November 7, 2000 Page 6 better for our library, especially since the federal government no longer funds the brick and mortar projects.Pam then encouraged Library Board Members to attend and to let her know if they plan on attending. Scott Gardiner requested a list of Representatives for this area and another list showing Representatives likely to be influential in supporting a statewide project.These lists will be ready at the December meeting. 7.Call to the Public:None. 8.Requests for future agenda items: 9.Adjournment: President (> .
