Idaho Road Regular Meeting September 13, 2001 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held September 13, 2001 at 6:07 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Absent Barbara Gardner Stephen Flynn Virginia Foat Barbara Mueting (acting secretary) Theresa Nesser Staff: Spencer Paden, Library Manager 1.Acceptance of Agenda: 2.Acceptance of minutes for August 9, 2001 regular Meeting: 3.Acceptance of minutes for June 28, 2001 special Meeting Beverly Kimball -Wright The question of accepting the agenda was placed before the Board and was accepted by general consent. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 6.Librarian's Report: 7.Old Business: a.Update on the building expansion Report and discussion (Postponed From the August 9, 2001 regular Meeting). b. Spencer Paden reported that it has been a very positive month.Circulation in books has increased from a year ago.There has been an increase in audio tapes, video and in-house computer use.Patron visits were up. 621 books have been added to the collection. Both adult and juvenile patrons were added.New items were added to the collection.Several items were withdrawn from the collection.Volunteer hours were quite substantial.Children's programs continue with 118 attendees in the month for storytime. There were 5 sessions for babytime bringing in a total of 93 attendees.Teen Night Out had 367 in attendance.Three computer classes took place.There were four sessions of the Writers Club.There were 30 student visits with 31 hours for literacy. Motion was made by Theresa Nesser to table the discussion of the building expansion report until next month. Motion was seconded by Barbara Mueting. All members present were in favor. Review discussion, and possible vote on recommended changes to Library Policies Spencer discussed that the changes recommended by the Committee had been incorporated into the Library policy.The next step is to forward the revisions to the City Attorney for review and recommendations.Theresa Nesser spoke on behalf of the Committee and discussed that Pam Loui had read the report to the Committee along with noted changes. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 8.New Business: a.Welcome new Library Board member b.Election of Officers Additional changes were recommended by the Committee as well as identifying and separating procedural information within the policy to be placed into a procedures manual at a later time. Barbara Gardner commented on the proposed library changes.Copies of the new adult/juvenile library cards were reviewed and their relation to the Electronic Information System policies.The staff is currently required to supervise patron usage of computers.The backside of the juvenile card states that children over the age of 15 can get their own library card.But video and interne use require parental signature. Spencer discussed that some reasoning for revising the policy is so we do not limit ourselves by putting in language that may need to be changed frequently. Motion was made by Virginia Foat to forward the revisions of the Library Policy to the City Attorney for review.Motion was seconded by Barbara Mueting. All members present were in favor. Barbara Gardner welcomed Stephen Flynn as the newest member of the Library Board. Steve grew up in Phoenix and has been teaching for 10 years.He is looking forward to working with the members of the Board. Virginia Foat nominated Theresa Nesser for the position of President and Barbara Gardner seconded it. Theresa accepted her nomination.A vote was taken and passed unanimously. Theresa Nesser nominated Virgina Foat for the position of Vice- President and Barbara Mueting seconded it. Theresa Nesser nominated Barbara Mueting as Secretary.Virginia Foat seconded the nomination. Barbara accepted her nomination.A vote was taken and passed unanimously. Spencer discussed the "Teen Night Out" program.The purpose of the program was to introduce teens in the community to the new teen room at the Library.367 teens attended the event on Friday, August 17. The Library staff managed the large attendance with the assistance of the Apache Junction Police and their Police Explorer group.Most of the students who attended were between the ages of 12 and 14 years and in the 7 th and 8 rn grades. During the program a name for the teen room was chosen.It is now called the "Teen Compound." 9.Request for future agenda items:Old Business.
