Idaho Road Regular Meeting December 13, 2001 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held December 13, 2001 at 6:05 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Barbara Gardner Stephen Flynn Virginia Foat Beverly Kimball -Wright Theresa Nesser Staff: Pamela Loui, Library Director and 1.Acceptance of Agenda: 2.Acceptance of minutes for September 13, 2001 regular Meeting: Absent Barbara Mueting Spencer Paden, Library Manager 3.Call to the Public: 4.Correspondence and Communications: 5.Librarian's Report: Motion was made by Barbara Gardner and seconded by Beverly Kimball -Wright. Motion passed by general consent. The question of accepting the minutes for the November 8, 2001 regular Meeting was placed before the Board and was accepted by general consent. No response. None. Pam reported another busy month for the Library.Increases continue with books, audiotapes, and videocassettes.In-house computer use has increased.New patrons continue to register.There were some withdrawals of materials.Children's City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 programs continue this month with four story times and four baby times.Well- known author Conrad Storad visited with 22 in attendance.There was one "Teen" book discussion group with five attendees and one TAB meeting for the young adults. Adult events included eight computer classes with a total of 95 in attendance. There were four sessions of the Writer's Club.Four "Mystery" book discussions and one "Potpourri" discussion group were held.A post Civil War program entitled "Lieutenant Flipper" included 19 attendees. Two Islamic programs were held.A "Dolly & Beads" program was held with 70 in attendance.This was a program where beads were pulled and shaped over a hot flame. Pam spoke at one session of the Citizens Leadership Institute with 22 in attendance. 6.Old Business: a.Review, discussion and possible vote on recommended changes to Library policies.Revisions noted in the October 11, 2001 meeting were incorporated into a current version of the policy, and included modifications made by City Attorney, Joel Stern.Motion was made by Barbara Gardner to accept the corrected version of the policy and present it to the City Council for final approval.Motion passed unanimously. b. Board Vacancy Update Pam stated that a candidate is scheduled to be interviewed December 17th, 2001. Once Council has decided upon a candidate, an appointment will be made at the second Council meeting in January.If the person does not appear on December 17`h, it will be time to look for more candidates. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 c.Parental responsibility disclaimer. 7.New Business: a.Discussion of the AZLA/MPLA Conference. This disclaimer has been modified basedon changes made in the November 8th meeting.The current date listed in the disclaimer will be changed to say "Effective immediately."Motion was made by Barbara Gardner to accept the disclaimer with the modification and post in the Library (on fluorescent paper) as soon as the City Council approves the policy changes.Beverly Kimball- Wright seconded the motion. A roll call vote showed all members present were in favor. Pam and Spencer attended the session, "Designing Libraries."Included in the session was information on planning to construct and methods on identifying space needs.The session also discussed how to plan for the future growth of a community. Pam and Spencer came back with some great formulas that will provide them with substantiated figures to take to the city when it is time to consider a building project. Fundraising was another session that Pam attended. This focused on "in -kind" fundraising, where people give gifts to the library.Pam also attended a program called "Libraries Build Sustainable Communities." The idea is for libraries to serve as a way to bring a sense of community through environmental, economic or equity issues. An exercise was presented where pictures were put on a wall. It was called "postcards from home."Attendees were asked to look at each picture and go to the picture that they were most drawn to.Almost every person in the room was drawn to a particular City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 b.Invitation to the volunteer recognition event. picture. Following, there would be a 3 or 4 question discussion that dealt with the picture and what drew the person to it.Pam said she would like to share this with the adult services person in charge of programming. This could be a good outlet to get the community talking.It would be a fun project to help people think about the library. Barbara Gardner attended the session, "Designing a Teen Space; Hot Topics for Young Adults."Barbara shared information on graphic novels.A graphic novel is an illustrated novel with drawings and bubbles that tell a story. Graphic novels have a higher reading level and contain a storyline, plot, and characters similar to that of comic books. This event will take place on Friday, January 18 th, 2002.If you would like to attend please let us know.The event will be held in the Chamber of Commerce Conference room. 8.Requests for future agenda items Old Business.
