A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was
held May 9, 2002 at 6:01 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as
prescribed by law.

The question of accepting the agenda for the
May 9, 2002, regular Meeting was placed
before the Board and was accepted by
general consent.

Mrs. Shannon Flynn was recognized.Mrs.
Flynn works with the Department of
Revenue and has requested that all laws
relating to the procedure on inspection of
the bags, briefcases etc. be followed.
4.Correspondence and Communications:None.
5.Librarian's Report:Pam reported on the monthly report.
Increases continue as items are added to the
collection.Children's programs continue
with eight regular story times and 173 in
attendance. There were four baby times

with 66 in attendance.Seven school visits
included 489 attendees.There was one Tots'
n Books program with 16 attendees.There
were 2 performances of The Great Arizona
Puppet Theater with 115 in attendance. Four
parent/child workshops were held with 85 in
attendance.There was one RIF picnic
family program with 125 attendees and one
Headstart computer class with six attendees.
The young adult programs included one
Teen Book Discussion with four attendees,
one Teen Recognition with 46 attendees and
one TAB meeting with 13 attendees.Adult
events included seven computer classes with
70 attendees.There were four sessions of
the Writers Club with 14 in attendance.A
"Potpourri" book discussion, "Mystery"
Book discussion and Animal Dreams book
discussion were held. A Genealogy program
was held with 22 in attendance.
6.Old Business:
a.Discussion on 2002/2003 Budget: Pam reported nothing new on the Budget.
An update will be provided at the next
meeting.
b.OneBook AZ update:This program was successfully completed.
Publicity was very good statewide.
7.New Business:
a.Report for Youth Services Margaret Vigil-Meza reported on the
Department on Library Summer Library Summer programs.Teen Night will
Programs:take place on May 17 th from 6:00-10:00 pm
for ages 13 to 18.There will be a "Weakest
Link"episode filmed.The summer reading
program will again be sponsored by the
2001 "World Champion" Diamondbacks.
Summer Reading runs from May 28 th - July
27 th. There will be a Harry Potter
extravaganza June 1, from 10:00-3:00 pm.
There will be lots of fun and games.The AJ
Kids book club will begin for the first time
this summer and include doing a craft that

b.Reconsideration and possible
vote on change of procedure
to inspect patron bags,
briefcases, backpacks, etc.:
will be related to each book.On June 25,
there will be a paper plane workshop. On
July 2, there will be an American Girls Tea.
There will also be a babysitting workshop.
Free movies will also take place this year.
The gameboard has been modified this year
to add a girl character to the front cover.
Each 20 minutes of reading equals one
block.Parents need to initial and then
children can bring in their gameboards to
receive prizes.Some of the prizes included
are:stickers, door hangers, stencil rulers,
and bookmarks.The final prize is a soft
football, soccerball, baseball or basketball.
There is also a mystery prize of a flying disc
and a ticket voucher to go to a
Diamondbacks game.Age limit is infant to
18 for the Read Your Way to the Ballpark
programs.There will be a teen book
discussion for teens 12-18.Each 30 minutes
of reading will equal a block.Some prizes
include:popcorn coupons for Harkins, a
Pepsi key ring,Harkins refill cups, Sonic
food coupons, Skateland passes, and candy
bars.
Pam reported on recent information received
from the City Attorney which states that we
should remove the procedure to inspect
patron bags, briefcases, etc.If we have
reasonable cause to believe that patrons may
have library items not checked out,we will
request the patron to step back from the gate
and/or ask them if they will show us the
content of their bags.
Motion was made by Barbara Gardner to
remove the procedure that refers to the
inspection of patron bags, briefcases,
backpacks, etc., through the advice of our
City Attorney.Motion was seconded by
Stephen Flynn.A roll call vote was taken.

The Library Board Annual Report
is due to the City Council on or before
the first Monday of July. Pam has requested
that the Library Board consider holding a
special meeting on June 27, 2002, at 6:00
pm. All members agreed.
