A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was
held June 13, 2002 at 6:03 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as
prescribed by law.

The question of accepting the agenda for the
June 13, 2002, regular Meeting was placed
before the Board and was accepted by
general consent.

Theresa Nesser provided information on an
upcoming event.There will be a Board
Training and Strategic Planning event at the
Gold Canyon Best Western on Saturday,
July 13 th from 9:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m.This
training is provided for any individual who
is currently on a Board or is interested in
serving on a Board.Contact the Chamber of
Commerce for more information.

Pam reminded the Board members of the
Special Board meeting to be held on June
27, 2002, to discuss and approve the Annual
Report.Pam also invited the Board to join
the Library in celebration of Flag Day, June
14 th from 2:00 — 5:00 p.m.There will be
face painting, prizes and cake for everyone.
Pam reported on the monthly report.
Increases continue as items are added to the
collection.Children's programs continue•
with two regular story times and 41 in
attendance. There were five baby times with
66 in attendance.One school visit included
103 attendees.There was one Parent/Child
Workshop with 17 in attendance.There
were 319 Summer Reading Registrations.
Young adult programs included Teen Night
with 56 attendees, one Teen Book
Discussion with three attendees and one
TAB meeting with six attendees.Teen
summer reading registrations totaled 51.
Adult events included three computer
classes with 20 attendees.There were four
sessions of the Writers Club with 18 in
attendance.A "Potpourri" and "Mystery"
Book discussion were held.The "Food for
Fines" program brought in 1, 971 food
items.
Discussion on 2002/2003 Budget: The City Council held budget work sessions
on June 3 and June 5.Everything the City
Manager recommended for the Library
budget Was left as requested by the Council
at the end of the two work sessions, except
that the Library book budget was
recommended by Council to be increased by
$5,000.00.Requests made by the Library
that were not approved by the budget
committee included the Digital Materials
.Flow System, a system that would provide
digital tags and eventually a self check
system, and the, Library's request for an
additional secretary. and half time Library

made full time and three nonclassified
postitions were added in the City Manager's
recommendation.
Pam reported that the Apache Junction
Library's OneBook AZ discussion had 5
attendees, typical for a book discussion held
in April.The Library purchased 11 new
copies of Animal Dreams that circulated 40
times.
Pam reported on the Summer Youth events
that have already taken place.Harry Potter
'day was a huge success.Kids participated
in a game of quidditch and snitch relay and
watched the movie "Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone."Arizona Diamondback
organist Bobby Freeman presented a great
show along with a surprise special
appearance from Diamondback mascot,
Baxter the Bobcat.Magician Craig Davis
provided an exciting magic show that
included juggling and fascinated the
audience.Movies will be presented each
Thursday during the summer.The movies
"Atlantis," and "Cinderella II" have been
big hits and provided a large turnout.Teen
Night was presented on May 17th for teens
13 and older.The highlights were playing
"The Weakest Link" game.The teens also
• had board games and movies available.
Members of the Apache Junction Writer's
Club were judges of a short story and poetry
contest at the recent "Teen Chat Café."
Winners received $10.00 in gift certificates
from Waldenbooks.Although the first
summer Teen Book Discussion was not well
attended, the teens expressed .their desire to
continue with the program.More
discussions are scheduled throughout the
summer.
a.Results of "Food for Fines"Pam reported that 1,971 items were
Program -collected.This is 655 more then last year.
Some patrons also brought food items to
donate.
