Idaho Road Regular Meeting December 12, 2002 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held December 1.2, 2002 at 6:01 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Absent Beverly Kimball -Wright Theresa Nesser Stephen Flynn Joyce Payne Staff: Pamela Loui, Library Director 1.Acceptance of Agenda: 2.Acceptance of minutes for November 14, 2002 regular Meeting: 3.Call to the Public: Pam Stoelk Michael Klan Virginia Foat The question of accepting the agenda for the December 12, 2002, regular Meeting was placed before the Board and was accepted by general consent. Shirley Dewey attended as the new President for the Friends of the Library. Helen Sandnig is the new Vice -President: Evelyne Chaffey is the new Secretary and Kate Spilman is the Treasurer. Shirley stated that the FOL will be making copies of the information sheet that came out on the State ,Shared Revenues to share with patrons and neighborhoods. The FOL will also be taking out an ad to notify the public of this issue. The State Shared Revenues information was created to provide encouragement for people to contact their legislators so that the state does not try to balance its budget problems on the backs of their cities. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 4.Correspondence and Communications:None 5.Librarian's Report: 6.Old Business: a.Follow-up on Board Member who has missed more than 3 meetings. A presentation of the Sweet Adelines will take place on December 20 at 7:00 p.m. The Teen Advisory Board will be doing a performance entitled "Polar Express" on Thursday December 19 th at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby. Monthly Report statistics for November are as follows:Books, audio/visual and video materials have all increased from last year. Patron visits continue to rise substantially. This increase could be related to RIF distributions that were done in the Library. We continue to add materials and withdraw materials from the collection.The cd display case purchased by the Friends of the Library has arrived and the cd collection is being organized.These cd's will face out so that patrons can see the covers.Volunteer hours totaled 470 and the winter programs have been well attended.Young Adult . events included a TAB meeting and Teen Outpost with 17 in attendance for both. Teen Quest included 4 attendees.Adult events included the Head Start Tour with 20 attendees.Pam gave a presentation at the Citizen's Leadership Institute with 23 attendees.The Fall Volunteer Get Together included 19 attendees.This n' That Book Club had 6 in attendance and Dying for a Mystery had 11 attendees.There was a presentation on Carl Hayden with 11 attendees.Five computer classes were held with a total of 42 attendees.There were three sessions of the Writers Club with 21 attendees. Pam reported that a letter was sent to Pam Stoelk after the November Board meeting to City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 7.New Business a.Report on AZLA Meeting b.Discussion on Patriot Act. request her resignation from the Board due to non-attendance brought on by work conflicts.To date, no response has been received from Ms. Stoelk.Pam Loui contacted the City Clerk and was advised to send a letter outlining a brief history and summary of this issue to the Mayor and Council if no response was received.A letter to Council was prepared for Library Board review and a motion was made by Theresa Nesser to have the Library Board President sign the letter.Beverly Kimball Wright seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken and passed unanimously. Five attendees from the Library attended the AzLA Conference.Some very interesting ideas for future programs were included. Pam attended programs on Genealogy and passed out handouts that included the "Top 10 Genealogy Websites" and "Frequently Asked Genealogy Questions."Pam also spoke of a Teen program that was put on by the Tucson Public Library called "It's Wild @ Your Library."Teens worked with the International Wildlife Museum and brought in a tortoise, lizard, and snakes.Kids were shown how to hold and handle the animals. The program was very well received. Pam was also able to view the bookmobile recently added -by The Maricopa County Library District.It has many great features including computer access capabilities, and a satellite wireless network. Pam and Spencer attended part of a teleconference that discussed this Act.The USA PATRIOT Act stands for: "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism."If someone comes in with a court order seeking information related to suspected acts of terrorism via computer usage, the Library will comply by providing them with the information they City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 8.Request for future agenda items: 9. Adjournment: President Secretary are requesting.Any staff approached with inquiries should ask for documentation first before providing information and notify the Library Director or Library Manager at once.The City Attorney should also be notified immediately. Old Business. Follow-up on possibly incorporating language outlining appropriate staff response to use of the USA PATRIOT Act as a Library Procedure. New Business. Reminder of the Library Legislative Day. Discussion on a Museum Partnership. Meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
