Rhonda Jackson asked how the Library staff would handle a request from a law enforcement agency to search patron records.Pam told the Board that all staff is aware that a request from any law enforcement agency must be sent to Pam or whoever is in charge of the Library at the time the request is made.In addition, Library staff has been told to contact the City Attorney in case of an FBI request so that the City Attorney can respond to the request. If local law enforcement requests a search, the library follows state statute which requires that a court order be obtained before proceeding.Stephen Flynn asked that the Library simply warn the patrons that there is a possibility that their electronic documents etc. may be subject to search and investigation. Michael Klatt asked how we would go about providing this information to the patrons.Stephen Flynn suggested that a sign be posted.Pam informed the Board that the USA PATRIOT Act text can be accessed over the internet if anyone is interested in learning more.If the Board would like to pursue this, they would need to decide among themselves and eventually be agreed on what they would want to happen. It would then have to go to the City Attorney to make sure that there are no violations of any laws. Pam asked that the Board members keep in mind that there may be some patrons who would feel fearful to use the library services if they think there is a possibility of law enforcement agency officials viewing their information.
