SPECIAL MEETING
January 16, 2004
A special meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library
was held January 16, 2004, at 6:53 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice
as prescribed by law.

(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities,
Threats) analysis of the Committee's
recommended service area responses
with a possible vote on the Library
Board's recommendations to the
Planning for Results Committee:
The question of accepting the agenda for the
January 16, 2004, special Meeting was
placed before the Board.Theresa Nesser
made a motion to accept the agenda.
Rhonda Jackson seconded the motion and it
was unanimously accepted by a voice vote.
Wendy Skevington introduced herself to the
Library Board.Wendy is the Facilitator for
the Planning for Results Committee and
provided the Board with a brief report on the
first Planning for Results meeting. The
Planning for Results Committee did a
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and
Threats analysis (SWOT) on the service

responses that they would be selecting from.
The Committee then voted for their top 3
service responses.The chosen service
responses were:
General Information, Lifelong Learning,
Current Topics and Titles and Basic
Literacy. Current Topics and Titles and
Basic Literacy resulted in a tie.
From the service responses chosen by the
Planning for Results Committee, the Library
Board participated in their own SWOT
analysis below.
1.a.General Information- Strengths were:
A resource for the community, website,
collection, Friends group, reference staff,
phone reference, support for education
and lifelong learning, information
literacy, children's programs and an
educational.aid/tool....
b.General Information -Weaknesses
were: lip ting.fechnology";:if 'fun is
removed, size Of facility (no room for
technOlogy) growth rate' -Of coMmunity,
use of library, hours oloperation,,not
open Sunday.
c.General Information -Opportunities
were:Partnerships with schools, money
to put into databases.
d.General Information -Threats were:
Decline in usage, boring place, lifelong
learning.
2. a.Lifelong Learning -Strengths were:
Internet, volunteer expertise, variety of
collections, programs -storytime, teens.
staff, technology, computer classes.
b.Lifelong Learning -Weaknesses
were: Other service priorities, number of
staff to meet a variety of interests.
Technology, quiet spaces, size, hours of

operation are limited due to small staff,
dollars.
c.Lifelong Learning —Opportunities
were: To develop programs for wide
range of interests to youth and adult,
artists (pottery, art, jewelry, story
workshops) partnering with Parks and
Recreation with materials.Library
teaching a course on how to use the
library.
d.Lifelong Learning —Threats were:
money drain on other library services,
spend lots of dollars upgrading
technology.
3. a.Current Topics and Titles —Strengths
were: The collection, internei/computers,
biggest calling card (the draw), personnel
knowledgeable in trends, promotes
literacy.
b.Current Topics and Titles —
Weaknesses were: multiple copies (cost)
takes up a lot of space, cost of reshelving
and discarding, personnel to know trends,
no comfortable furniture, atmosphere.
c.Current Topics and Titles —
Opportunities were: To expand collection
and increase variety, Coffee Bar, soft
seats.
d.Current Topics and Titles —Threats
were:No space for expanding the
collection, general info is a threat to the
calling card.Concentrating on one
threatens all others.
4.al Basic Literacy —Strengths were:
.Learn -a -test, Tutor.com.
b.Basic Literacy —Weaknesses were:
Hours of operation too limited, cost,
staff and volunteers with special skills,
training needs, collection to support

3. Adjournment:
basic literacy is at CAC.Identifying the
population, space for tutoring in private.
c.Basic Literacy -Opportunities were:
Parnership with CAC, expand collection
to books of adult interest, tutor, children,
bilingual books for children.
Service Responses voted for by the
Library Board were:
General Information — 6 votes
Current Topics — 5 votes
Lifelong Learning — 5 .votes
Cultural Awareness — 2 votes
As members of the Planning for Results
Committee, staff member Stephanie Greene
and Library Board member Rhonda Jackson
will provide the staff and Library Board's
SWOT analysis to the committee members
at the next meeting on February 5 th.It will
then be the job of the Planning for Results
Committee to help decide service areas that
will be libraby,piioritie§ for:Ilje'neXt'three to
five years.
