Regular Meeting
March 11, 2004
A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library
was held March 11, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice
as prescribed by law.

The question of accepting the agenda for the
March 11, 2004, regular Meeting was placed
before the Board.Joyce Payne made a
motion to accept the agenda.Theresa
Nesser seconded the motion and it was
unanimously accepted by a voice vote.
The question of accepting the minutes for
the February 12, 2004, regular Meeting was
placed before the Board. Beverly Kimball-
Wright made a motion to accept the minutes.
Joyce Payne seconded the motion and it was
unanimously accepted by a voice vote.
None.
4.Correspondence and Communications:None.
5.Librarian's Report:Increases continue as book circulations
exceed that of one year ago.We continue to
see an increase in video materials and in-
house computer use.In-house computer use
is now done.u'sing,Cybraryn software.

6.Old Business:
a.Planning for Results Committee
update and vote on
library goals and objectives for
the 3-5 year plan.
Patrons can come in and use their card
number without having to sign in at the
computer lab desk.This has provided more
freedom to the desk staff to assist patrons in
the computer lab.Magazine use has
increased as more titles circulate.Patron
visits have increased greatly from one year
ago and new patron cards have doubled
from one year ago.We continue to add new
materials.Programs included the following:
Eight storytimes with 250 in attendance and
four babytimes with 36 in attendance. There
was a school visit to the Superstition
Mountain Elementary School for the "I Love
To Read Week" with 102 attending.There
were three Parent/Child Workshops with 36
in attendance and four RIF distributions with
377 attendees.There was one TAB meeting
with 14 in attendance and one Teen Book
Discussion with 13 attendees.Adult
Programs included the "Here and There"
Book Club with se/en attendees and the
"Dying for a Mystery" Book Club had 10
attendees.There were 21 participants in the
Lost Dutchman's Day Parade.and four
sessions of the Writers Club with 34
attendees.Computer classes totaled 16 with
215 in attendance.There were nine one-on-
one PIT stops.
Director, Pam Loui provided a draft Of the
Apache Junction Public Library Three Year
Plan. This draft was presented to the
Planning Committee on March 4.The Plan
specifically addressed the three service
response areas of General Information,
Current Topics and Titles and Lifelong.
Learning. Current Topics and Titles will
deal mostly with collections and Lifelong
Learning centers mostly on preschoolers for
literacy reading readiness and on the 60 and
over population for computer classes and

training. The Planning Committee
forwarded the draft to the,Board for
approval.Motion was rria,de by Theresa
Nesser that the Apache JunctiOn Public
Library Three -Year Plan be put in its final
form and presented tO the City Council.
Michael Klatt seconded the motion and it
was unanimously accepted by roll call vote.
Cans O'Malley — Cans is a Library Clerk II.
He handles check -in and check-out of
materials and helps patrons in finding
materials.Cans also helps in planning
display boards and assisting in interlibrary
loans, book mending and repair and closing
of the library.Canis has been with the
library for four years and started as a Library
Page, shelving books.Cans is a full-time
student at CAC and enjoys interacting with
the patrons of the Library.
Pam presented the Library Board with a
copy of the proposed budget.Three staff
positions have been requested: One - part-
time Library Processing Assistant, one -
part-time Library Clerk I and one full-time
Secretary.Increases are requested in the
following categories:Office Supplies,
Small Tools and Equipment, Educational
Supplies, Library Books, Minor Capital
Equipment, Audio -Visual Material, Other
Operating Supplies, Personnel Services,
Other Communications, Business
Conferences, Training, Printing and
Binding, Paper, Library Subscriptions, and
Special Contractual Services.Requests
decreased in Software Maintenance and
Other Services.
Motion was made by Joyce Payne to accept
the budget proposal for 2004-05 and have
Pam present it to the budget committee and
Council.Motion was seconded by Theresa

Conference report.
8.Request for future agenda items:
Nesser.A roll call vote showed five
members in favor and one member opposed.
Pam attended the Public Library Association
Conference.Sessions included topics about
planning for fundraising, decision making in
the library, team -building, staff
development, new technologies like RF1D
that uses radio frequency identification tags,
24/7 reference, using websites more
creatively, and how to make the circulation
desk more ergonomically correct.

Description of documents new patrons get
when they receiye a new library card.
Discussion on time limits of using
computers.
Utilizing the kitchen after expansion to offer
coffee/donuts to patrons.
Staff to wear vest or identifying apparel for
patrons.
RFID information.
