Idaho Road Regular Meeting May 13, 2004 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held May 13, 2004 at 6:05 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as •prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Virginia Foat Beverly Kimball -Wright Stephen Flynn Joyce Payne Rhonda Jackson Theresa Nesser Staff: Pamela ,Loui, Library Director, I.Acceptance of Agenda:_ 2.Acceptance of minutes for April 8, 2004 regular Meeting: 3.Call to the Public: Absent Michael Klatt The question of accepting the agenda for the' May 13, 2004, regular Meeting was placed before the Board.Theresa Nesser made a motion to accept the agenda.Stephen Flynn seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. The question of accepting the minutes for the April 8, 2004, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Theresa Nesser made a motion to accept the minutes. Beverly Kimball -Wright seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. None. 4.Correspondence and Communications:None. 5.Librarian's Report:Pam participated in the Occupational Advisory Board for the Library Information Technician program at Mesa Community College.We were able to have one of their interns work with Trish Pelletier.Increases City of Apache Junction Library Board of Ti*tees Regular Mdeting ' Page 2 6.Old Business: a.Budget update for 2004/05. b.Update on Planning for Results Library Plan. continue as book circulations, video materials, and in-house computer use exceed statistics of one year ago.Patron visits increased over one year ago.Books and paperbacks have been added to the . collection as have books on CD as we attempt to enhance that collection. Programs included the following:Six storytimes with 125 attendees.There were four babytimes with 52 in attendance and two school visits with 111 attendees.Presentations included "The Warm Place" by the Phoenix Theater Academy which had 100 attendees and 2 presentations of "Goldilocks" by the Great AZ Puppet Theater that had 286 attendees. Young Adult programs included Teen Chat Café with 13 attendees and the Teen Book discussion with four attendees. There was a TAB meeting with eleven attendees and a TAB recognition event with 33 attendees. Adult events included the Here and There Book Club with five attendees and the Dying for a Mystery Club with five attendees.There were four sessions of the Writers Club with 22 in attendance, 16 computer classes with 121 attendees and six one-on-one PIT stops. The original request for the library budget was $1,463,790.The City Manager has recommended $1,379,930.Most of the reduction was in requested personnel. City Council has recommended adding a part- time library processing assistant to start in October. Pam believes the library did fairly well with the budget considering the monetary constraints for the City. Pam handed out the Planning for Results brochure. This is a 3-5 year plan that staff will be assessing each year to make sure that the objectives set will help us to meet the goals.The Council has acknowledged receipt of the Plan and we have submitted our Plan to the State Library. New Business:' , a.Reporf from Youth Services Department on summer Library programs.Mary Joy Zuik reported on the Youth Services programs.Plant a Seed Read was just completed.We had a great turnout registering 50 in the first week.There is a whole new look this year for the summer reading program which includes a new looking jackalope and cub reporter on the reading bags and a new game board. Prizes are listed on the board along with directions and information also listed in Spanish.Summer Reading starts June •7 th and runs through July 31. Some prizes include stretchy lizards and sticky hands. Some of the events will include:Marvelous Mondays which are elementary school aged book discussions.Organist, Bobby Freeman will be here and there will be cartooning and a chocolate fest for kids ages 10 and up. Storytimes will continue in the summer and free movies will be showing each Thursday during the summer.In addition Wendelin Van Draanen a writer of children's mysteries will be donating 5 books for the library to give away.We will be having a continuation program of our own.Readers will be asked to do a variety of things like read a mystery, biography, magazine, paperback book etc.When they complete the program they will receive a ticket to a Diamondbacks game.The Republic is sponsoring a baseball clinic for all the participants at Bank One Ballpark sometime in September. This clinic will be four hours long and kids will get to run the bases and slide into home.The gameboard must be finished in order to get an entry.There will be 200 kids accepted countywide.The Teen Summer program is entitled "Say Aloha To Reading."A prize will be received for each five hours of reading.Some prizes include: City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 - b.Meet library staff member. c.Discussion and possible •vote to change loan, periods and limits d.Discussion and possible vote on staff procedure concerning bloodborne pathogens. candy bars, key rings and sonic coupons. When the gameboard is completed, teens will receive a Harkins movie ticket. Gail Graham-Fisel — Library Clerk II.Gail has been with the library for 15 years.She started volunteering in October of 1987.In • November of 1989 Gail became a part-time employee and went to full-time status in July of 1990.Gail works at the Circulation desk checking in and out materials, ,answering the phones and taking library applications.Gail sorts the mail, repairs all media and takes care of the magazine collection.She handles the Arizona Talking Books for the Blind and works on the recycling and safety committees and also weeds through donations. This request originated from the Circulation staff.We are asking the Library Board to vote to change check out of videos/DVD's to 7 videos per card for 7 days.Motion was made by Rhonda Jackson to change the limit of videos/DVD's to be checked out to 7 per card and for 7 days.Motion was seconded by Theresa Nesser.A roll call vote was taken.All members present were in favor. We had an incident occur where a patron came into the library and was bleeding. There are bloodborne pathogens that can be transmitted to unprotected individuals. We realized we needed staff to have more guidance on how to operate under this type of condition.Pam met with other City staff including the City Attorney. A temporary library policy has been put together.Pam is asking that the Library Board approve this as a procedure that we will keep in our procedure book until we are ready to redo City of Ap-ache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meciing • Page 5 8.Request for future agenda items: 9. Adjournment: President our policy book.Rhonda Jackson made a motion to approve the library procedure on bloodbome pathogens.Joyce Payne seconded the motion.A roll call vote was taken, and all members present were in favor. Old Business. Budget update. Summer Reading registration update. Reminder of date and time of Special Board meeting to discuss and approve the Library Board Annual Report. New Business.
