Idaho Road Regular Meeting January 13, 2005 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held January 13, 2005 at 6:04 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Librarian's Report: Theresa Nesser The question of accepting the agenda for the January 13, 2005, regular Meeting was placed before the Board.Joyce Payne made , a motion to accept the agenda.Michael Klatt seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. The question of accepting the minutes for the December 9, 2004, regular Meefirig was placed before the Board. Joyce Payne made a motion to accept the minutes.Theresa Nesser seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. None. None. Pam reviewed statistics for December. Some statistics have decreased slightly from one year ago due to weekend holidays. Pam discussed the Volunteer Recognition event City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 6. Old Business: a.Update on Library expansion. 7. New Business: a. Meeting library staff member. b. Discussion on non -active library card holders. that was held on January 12 th.It was a great success. A professional services agreement with Richard and Bauer was approved by the City Council.The architectural firm is now part of the project. Pam will be meeting with them on January 20 th.Pam hopes to have some good information in time for our next meeting in February.. Sonya Hewitt is a Computer Lab Assistant. Sonya started as a volunteer and worked and helped out with classes when they were held in the lab.Sonya assists patrons with many needs on the computer and also shows them how to search the interne.Sonya has been with the Library for about 2 years. Sonya previously worked as a Chemical Lab Technician for 20 years.Sonya works 19 hours per week and also assists in shelving videos and dvds. This was a question Theresa Nesser had raised at the last meeting.Staff member Trish Pelletier ran a query to see how many patrons have been active since the end of 2001 through December of 2004.The active number of patrons was 23,195.There are slightly over 40,000 registered patrons.Pam does not believe there is an urgent need to eliminate non -active library card holders as our system can hold 100,000 names.We will eventually be weeding out the system. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 c.Reconsideration on number of library items patrons can check out at one time, consideration to increase the number of cds to be checked out, and consideration to increase subject limits. 8. Request for future agenda items: When we first had the procedures written up we had set a total of 15 items to be .checked out on a library card.We had a -staff member check other libraries and.found.that,•..•15 items is ,an extremely low mirnber of - items that can be checked out based on the_., practices of other Valley:libraries:We found that most allow 50 items to be checked out at one time.Pam would like to know if the Board would like to reconsider the number of items patrons can check out. The second issue concerned increasing the limit on the number of cds that a patron can check out.We are starting to have an overcrowding in the two cd displayers we currently have.When the winter visitors leave, there may be an overabundance of cds for the shelving space that we have available.It may be time to consider increasing the limit from the current one of 3 cds.We also have a limit of 3 items per subject area.It is now being thought that our collection size is substantial enough to allow a person to check out more than 3 books in the same call number area if that is desired.Pam asked the Board to think about these issues which will be discussed again at the February Library Board meeting.
