None.
Pam informed the Board that two new
selfcheck workstations are in the process of
being set up. These stations have not been
installed in their final locations yet, due to
the Senior Center's delay in moving.
Statistics were reviewed for the June and
July monthly reports and showed that some
categories have increased while some
declined compared to a year ago.New
books and videos have been added to the
collection and children's program's did well
with summertime events.
The final budget was adopted on July 7,
2005.There were no additional budget
changes made.
Pam discussed the phone meeting that took -
place between the architect Jim Richard,
Assistant City Manager, Bryant Powell,
Library Manager, Spencer Paden, and
Project Manager, Ray DelZotto.A schedule "
was provided for the design charrette which

need to know if three (3) or more will be in
attendance so that a special meeting agenda

a.Meet Library Staff member
b.Discussion on increasing
the fee for library card
holders outside our service
area and possible vote on
recommendation.
c.Discussion on the Library's
reciprocal borrowing partners
and possible vote.
Meet Whitney Dixon.Whitney is a Library
Page and currently works 19 hours per
week.Whitney is responsible for shelving
of all materials in the library. She helps
patrons find materials on the shelves and
also assists in checking in and out at the
Circulation desk.Whitney has been with the
Library for almost one year.
Pam offered the idea that the Board consider
charging $40.00 annually for those not
located in our service area, or in an area
designated for reciprocal borrowing.The
Maricopa County Library District charges
$40.00 to any resident in Final County for
borrowing privileges at any of its libraries.
Our current charge is $10.00 for those out of
the service area. A motion was made by
Everett Deidiker to combine agenda items
8B and 8C for discussion purposes.The
motion was seconded by Joyce Payne. The
motion was passed by a vote of 3 to 2 in
favor.
Pam explained that there are some large
communities developing on our borders that
are not willing at this time to be reciprocal
borrowing partners with Apache Junction
Public Library.They are charging our
residents for use of their libraries but we are
not charging their residents to use our
library.Currently 3,367 Mesa residents hold
Apache Junction Library cards. In addition,
1,152 Queen Creek residents hold Apache
Junction Library cards,Almost 5,000
people are using our facility and not paying
anything for it.Reciprocal borrowing is
when two or more libraries agree to allow

individuals within each others service areas
to borrow materials without a charge. The
discussion of the Board showed that the
Board wished to retain the provision of free
library service to any individual who owned
property or a business, attended school, or
worked in Apache Junction. A motion was
made by Theresa Nesser to increase the fee
for library card holders outside our service
area from $10.00 to $40.00 annually.Joyce
Payne seconded the motion.All members
present were in favor.A motion was made
by Theresa Nesser to define the library's

The software system we currently use will .
only e-mail overdue notices and bills. We
will continue researching and checking other
options to see if this can be accomplished.
Update from Youth Services
Department on Library Sutnme'r -
programs.Liz Burks discussed the summer programs.
It was another great year. The two main
programs offered were "Xtra, Xtra Read
Your Way to the Ballpark," sponsored by
the AZ Diamondbacks and AZ Republic.
Registrations included 1,885 with a 5%
increase over last year. The Teen program-wasentitled " Joust Read." There were 360
teens registered for this program with a 28%
increase over last year.Together 2,245
youth were served. The total of youth that
completed the summer reading program was
835.This was a 9 % increase over last
year's completion rate.Programs were well
attended this summer and included events
such as the Singing Cowboy and a Juggler.
There was also a wonderful castle building
contest for the teens. It was a great success,
with the Winner making a spectacular castle
out of croutons.

f.Discussion on "Teen Nite
Out" at the Library.
g.Election of Officers.
Liz brought the idea of redoing the "Teen
Nite Out" to the Teen Advisory Board
(TAB).The purpose of the original event
was to promote the opening of the new teen
area.It included a contest to name the new
area.Word got around at the schools that
the library was having a dance since there
would be a DJ. This was not the case, and as
a result we did get many more teens than we
were prepared for.We still want to bring
teens into the library that normally do not
come.Suggestions by TAB members were
to prepare a short promotional video that
could be shown at the middle schools.
Another idea was to have a band concert or
a "battle of the bands."The idea would be
that the teens would need to come when we
are open to see what we have to offer. We
do not have the space any more to have a
DJ.The "teen nite out" event could not be
replicated due to greater space limitations.
Rhonda suggested to hold a dance at the
MultiGen Center with the price of admission
being proof of a tour of the library.Theresa
added that teens could come to the library
and get a card punched that would provide
them free admission for an event at the
MultiGen Center.She also suggested
requiring teens to make a commitment by
coming to the library, possibly checking out
materials, etc.Parameters will be defined
by the TAB members. Lori added that a
"lock in" could be done at the MultiGen
Center also. Joyce suggested the possibility
of doing scavenger hunts for materials in the
library.Ideas will be shared with TAB.
Rhonda Jackson nominated Joyce Payne for
