Idaho Road Regular Meeting September 8, 2005 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held September 8, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Absent Valerie Powell Rhonda Jackson The question of accepting the agenda fot the September 8, 2005, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Theresa Nesser made a motion to accept the agenda.Everett Deidiker seconded the motion.All members present were in favor. All members present were in favor. Mr. Russell Lawrence was in attendance. He is a resident of Fort Dodge, Iowa and a Trustee at the Library there.He uses the , library a great deal and was happy that he could attend this meeting. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 5. Librarian's Report: 6. Old Business: a.Update and discussion on library building project. Pam reviewed statistics for the monthly report and showed that most categories have iricreaSedoVer one year ago. The concept design for the smaller of the two plans has gone to the Project Manager for cost estimating.Pam will provide a report at the next meeting if available. b.Report and discussion on software research for e-mail reminders.Pam reported that Spencer checked with Dynix about pre -overdue notices by e-mail. Dynix is the vendor who provides our Horizon software.Horizon currently has a capability for sending out overdues by e-mail, but does not have the capability of sending out pre -overdue notices via e-mail. This type of setup is considered custom programming.Spencer did find out about a software that has been put out by a company called Jandi Enterprises Inc.The software is called "Library Elf" and is initiated by the individual patron. The patron must give the company his or her library card number and pin number so that this information can be accessed."Library Elf" is currently a free service and will provide notification before items are due. Pam further reported that Spencer has indicated to Dynix our Library's interest in Dynix developing the capability of pre -overdue e-mail notification for possible inclusion in a future software release. c.Follow-up discussion on "Teen Nite Out" with input from the Teen Advisory Board.The Teen Advisory Board discussed with Liz the suggestions that were made at the last meeting.They liked the idea of working with the Parks and Recreation department. They also liked the idea of having teens check out a book to earn a ticket to an event City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 7.New Business: a.Meet Library Staff member b.Resignation of Library Board member, Valerie Powell. held at the Multigen Center.They came up with an idea to create a trivia quiz or answer a riddle that would result in the, person doing more than just grabbing a book and checking it Out. The teens de beljeve that a . danee with a dj at the Multigen Center will draw a crowd of teens.This project will take some time to put together and Liz will ' be, getting together with Multigen staff to discuss it soon. Liz would like to recommend that we plan this event sometime in August of 2006 so that teens would come into the Library before the school year is underway. Meet Debbie Obolewicz.Debbie is the Library Processing Assistant.She started her employment in January of 2003 as a Library. Page.Debbie verifies orders, places stickers on books and handles the best sellers list.Debbie also shelves and works at Circulation when needed. Debbie is a part-time employee and she loves to help patrons find what they need and organize the shelves. President Lori D'Amico read the resignation letter sent by Valerie Powell.Everett Deidiker made a motion to accept the resignation of Valerie Powell.Theresa Nessey seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. c.Discussion on contributions By Pinal County Library District to the Apache Junction Library.Pam stated that we do receive many benefits from the Pinal County Library District as an affiliate, and we should continue being a part of the County's reciprocal borrowing. The District will distribute $20,700.00 this fiscal year to our Library to purchase materials because we are partners in the reciprocal borrowing within Pinal County. County library districts receive direct State •City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 Hand out containing registration numbers for youth slimmer events. Grants -in -Aid money.The county library districts decide if they will spend that money at the county library level or disperse it to the local libraries. Our county district has always been very good at sharing the money with the affiliate libraries.This year the amount we receive will be $1,770.00.The Pinal County Library District also pays for the Learnatest database where people can go online and take sample tests for various careers and study the GED. We have been in discussion with the county about picking up additional databases that they then will make available to all affiliates in the county. Everett Deidiker conunented that the Pinal , County Library District does offer valuable resources and our library should continue to be a participant.The other Board members voiced similar opinions.No action was necessary on this item. •Parn reviewed the 2005 Summer Reading statistics. 8.Request for future agenda items.Old Business. Presentation and discussion with the City Attorney on Board members' responsibilities under the State Open Meeting and Conflicts laws. Meet Library Staff member. Library Digital Audio books.
