6. Old Business:
a.Update and discussion on
library building project.
•Workshops where the parent of a young
child came in contact with a care provider •
that realized that their child appeared to
have autism. The caregiver helped the child
get the treatment he needed. Now, 2 years
later he is getting all kinds of services. It
shows that libraries do change lives and can
do some really wonderful.things.This
article was directed to Liz Burks, our Youth
Services Librarian who operates the
Parent/Child workshop.
Pam reviewed statistics for the monthly
report and showed that most categories have
increased over one year ago.
A presentation of the concept for library
expansion may be made to the Council on
either the February 21 st meeting or at the
March 6th worksession.Pam will provide a
report at the next meeting if available.
b.Update on development of
the former Senior Center
space. We have painters who are painting the old
senior center kitchen space which will be a
staff lounge.Once completed, carpeting
will be scheduled and installed concurrently
when the cabling and electrical will be done.
c.Update on Digital Audio
books.
7.New Business:
a.Teen Advisory Board update.
This includes not only audio books but e-
books, music and video. The training for
staff will take place in late February.March
will be used as a test period to make sure
technical questions can be answered by the
staff. We are scheduled to go live with
Overdrive on April 3.

year.Summer programs included popular
movies. TAB members sold drinks, candy
and cookies and teens and children really
enjoyed the movies.
In October TAB held a halloween Teen Chat
Café. There were many different costumes
and competitions for best costume, worst
costume, scariest costume and most original
costume.A Christmas play took place at the
Multigen facility and included more families
this year. TAB presented a "Polar Express"
play in which they created their own train as
a prop. In addition, they did a play of
Santa's Christmas vacation where Santa
decided to take a vacation during Christmas.
They also did these performances at Four
Peaks Elementary School.In January, guest
speaker, Stacy Cochran, who writes books
for teens, came to the library.Kids loved it
and a new TAB member signed on as a
result of this event.Stacy provided
information on how to publish, write and
bring books to life, and tips for overcoming
writer's block.Sonya Hewitt will be
another guest speaker in April. She is an
artist. February 25 th is the parade. This•years
parade float will be entitled "Parade of
Dreams" and will be a cloud float.
Members on the float will be characters
from their favorite books.
TAB is currently working on a teen lock
in/get together.Teens would come to the
library and would need to check out one
item from the library to receive a ticket.
Once they have their ticket, they can go to
the Multigen Center for a special fun time
just for them. Some ideas would be video
games, pool, scavenger hunts, board games
and musical chairs. TAB is also working on
the "Teen Compound."They are hoping to
paint a café scene on one wall and would
like to get high top tables and chairs so the
teens look like they are in a café.TAB
members would paint the scenery.They
would also like to get a neon sign that says

d.Discussion on computer
filtering.
"Teen Compound" or a scroll sign that tells
what upcoming things are going on at the
library.They are working on more
decorations and celebrity posters.TAB
would like to add more movies in the
summer and possibly poll teens on what
they want to watch. They are planning more
Teen Chat Cafes and will possibly have
game nights or drawing competitions.There
are 17 TAB members this year. TAB is also
looking into possibly adding special nights
where they could have people bring in
sculptures or pottery. They are creating a
magazine that would describe what movies
are coming out, what new books are out and
possibly include a poll on what teens want to
see in the library.
Meet Cans O'Malley. Canis is a Library
Clerk II.Canis works primarily at the
circulation desk checking materials in and
out.Cans also does book repairs and
proofreading.Caris is an honor student at
CAC studying Psychology.He has been
here for six years and enjoys working in the
library.
World Cat is the world's most
comprehensive bibliographic database. A
program called the "Open World Cat"
program will be starting up soon.It will
make items in the library collections
discoverable by people who search the
internet. At one time, World Cat was a paid
subscription product that libraries could
access. The Arizona State Library pays for
the Library's subscription. It is used in
verifying interlibrary loan requests and
finding libraries close by that have materials
patrons are looking for.It includes the title
of a book and then lists the holdings by
various libraries.

websites.Technology probably covers us
98% of the time.Unfortunately no filtering
product is 100%.Some of the libraries
arguing against using filters have said that
they don't want to use filters because it
gives the public a false sense of seeurity.
We also have a backup "use" policy for the
internet.Anyone who gets on to our
computers has agreed by touching the
keyboard that they are going to honor the
policy.The policy basically says that
anything illegal must not be accessed. It
reminds the public that we are a public place
and that children use the facility as well.
Spencer added that there are areas in the
policy that discuss the laws and appropriate
use of the library's computer system. We do
have signs in the computer areas as well that
have information that talks about the
appropriate use of the computers.
e.Discussion on corporate funding.Terri Parker stated she had not found
anything new on corporate funding and
noted that Pam had said that it might be a
good idea to wait until the expansion efforts
are presented to the Council before pursuing
avenues of funding.
f.Reminder of terms due to expire
June 30,2006.The following terms are due to expire on
June 30, 2006;Joyce Payne and Terri
Parker.Pam requested that if they would
like to be considered for a renewal term on
the Board, she needed a short note indicating
interest in being reappointed.
g.Reminder of upcoming
Library Legislative Day on
March 2, 2006.Pam read some information from the
Arizona Library Association promoting
Library Legislative Day.On Library
Legislative Day librarians from across the
state will have the opportunity to meet
elected officials and discuss issues of
importance. This is a critical year for
librarians because a portion of the 2006

legislative session concerns the expenditure
of a surplus of almost one billion dollars.
Numerous proposals already exist among
members of the legislature and from the
governor.AzLA voices also need to be
heard proposing and speaking about the
importance of libraries in the community,
the needs of local libraries and the
importance of school libraries.In addition
to librarians, there is always a desire that the
members of the library board and members
of the community that have an interest show
up and express to these legislatures that
these libraries are important. The day is on
Thursday, March 2. The time is between
9:00 and 4:00 p.m. Registration is between
8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.Pam needs to know
