Acceptance of Agenda: D. Acceptance of minutes for October 11, 2007 regular Meeting: The question of accepting the agenda for. the November 8, 2007 regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Terri Parker made a motion to accept the agenda.Pamela Kantowski seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. Old Business: 1. Update and discussion on library building project. None. .Tess Nesser read an e-mail from Lois Eldridge requesting information on getting reimbursment from the thank you cards she purchased. staff. Pam Loui reviewed the monthly report. The categories of books, audio, video, and in- house computer use all increased over October of the previous year. Patron visits declined compared to those of one year ago. Pam also commented that the Phoenix Lights Program being offered while the Board was meeting had excellent attendance. SRP will be replacing a transformer that will provide electrical service to the Library.In addition to the Library being closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, it will also be closed on Monday, November 26th to allow for this electrical work to be completed.The expansion is progressing well. Interior areas will be painted soon and most glass areas have been installed. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 2. Discussion on the feasibility of offering an etiquette class for .misbehaving Teens. 3.Discussion on Recognition for the teen volunteer who has contributed the most time to the '-library in a month. Library Security, TJ Watkins, talked to the Library Board about teens who misbehave in the Library.He discussed the procedure followed for unruly behavior. TJ also talked about the policy tracker used to document incidents that occur in the Library. Pam explained that the new expansion will assist in addressing issues of noise by offering noise canceling headsets and quiet spaces like the quiet reading and computer rooms. TJ's presence in the Library has really made things much calmer in the teen area. After a little discussion the Board members expressed opinions that the methods used by Library Security were adequate at this time and did not need any formal action by the Library Board. Pam Loui read information provided by Youth Services Librarian, Liz Burks on the teen recognition program. Library Team and Teen Advisory Board members are recognized as part of a group by the other teens in the group. Some of the Library Team recognition that is provided includes an annual City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 1. Library Team Party, certificate of recognition and letters of recommendation based on performance and sent to student's principal. Actively participating Teen ,Advisory Board members are recognized for each year of service at the library. Recognition is received as follows: 1st year - Certificate of recognition and TAB t -shirt with logo. 2nd year - TAB pin 3rd year - $10 Gift Certificate to Borders Books 4th year - TAB t -shirt with TAB member's name embroidered. 5th year - 2 movie passes 6th year - Best Buy Gift Certificate and 2 movie passes. Exceptional members have their names put on the Teen Advisory Board Plaque upon graduation out of TAB or when they leave TAB. TAB members also receive a letter of recommendation for employment or college upon request. The letter is based upon their performance as a TAB member. Liz stated that singling teen members out individually in another venue would cause dissention within the groups and damage team spirit. Recognizing a few members separately would cause -hurt feelings to those members not recognized. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 5 I. New Business: 4.Meet library staff member. 5. Discussion, on a secutity. pIan for the Library. Board members discussed the current recognition and members expressed their feelings that recognition was being done.No formal action was taken. Meet Judy Antrim. Judy is a Library Assistant I and has worked full-time for the past year. She worked part-time at the Library for 3 years before becoming full-time. Judy is part of the Youth Services team and works with children birth to 5 years. Her other duties include the parenting collection, picture books, Head Start, Play and Learn, Every Child Ready to Read and Start Smart.Judy also does family and children storytimes and prepares the children's reading lists. Judy has been in library services since 1984 and loves the work that she does. Pam Loui discussed the Library's Emergency Procedures Manual. There will need to be some updating of the manual upon completion of the new expansion.Some of the sections included are: disaster preparedness, emergency contacts, power outages, computer emergencies, evacuation procedures, fire alarm/extinguisher locations, first aid and bomb threats. Discussion on the Library Services and Construction Act Grant entitled: K -BOOM, Keeping Boomers' Options Open and Manageable. 7.Presentation by Friends of the Library of Their Fundraising project. Lois Eldridge recommended that we physically test our evacuating procedures at least once each year to make sure everyone knows the process.No formal action was taken. K -BOOM is the latest grant received by the Library. This grant was fully funded in the amount of $3.9,300 and will include outdoor shading, and cooling in addition to a projector screen and sound equipment in.the family courtyard. There will also be programming events for adults 50 years of age and over. Some concepts discussed will include tips for travel and health and financial services.Everett Deidiker suggested preparation for medicare.Lois Eldridge suggested AARP information and Tess Nesser suggested social security information. Friends of the Library President, Phyllis Niemela talked about the,engraved. tile project. These tiles will be displayed in the outdoor commemorative wall aCross from the Library front entrance.Cost of tiles is $50.00 for 2 lines, and a City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 7 third line for an additional $25.00.You can also add a picture for an additional $25.00. In addition, there is an anonymous donor who will match what the Friends make up until the end of the year. Checks can be made payable to the Friends of the Library.
