Idaho Road Regular Meeting August 13, 2009 A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held August 13, 2009 at 6:32 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. Roll Call Present Everett Deidiker Marie DePalma Theresa Nesser Loretta Nielsen Janice Stenglein Absent Rhonda Jackson Dr. Jon Lokensgard Staff: Spencer Paden, Library Manager Sancie Lee -Brown, Administrative Assistant C. Acceptance of Agenda: D. Acceptance of Minutes for June 11, 2009 regular meeting and June 23, 2009 special meeting: The question of accepting the agenda for the August 13, 2009 regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Theresa Nesser made a motion to accept the agenda. A second was made by Janice Stenglein. All members present were_in:-faVOi.- .4' The question:of,accepting the minutes for the June 11, 2009 regular Meeting and the June 23, 2009 special meeting was placed before the Board. Theresa Nesser made 'a motion to accept the minutes for both meetings.Marie DePalma seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. Meet library staff member. Spencer read a note from Councilmember Robin Barker. She thanked the employees of the library for the loyalty they have shown to City and the community. Spencer Paden reviewed the monthly report for June and July. There were increases in circulation of materials compared to those of one year ago in both reports. Programs also continue to be popular. None. Meet TJ Watkins. TJ is the Library Security Officer. TJ was been_wIth .the -City of Apache,'Junction :fonov,er,25 years ,:ke startedhfscreer working for th6 .Military Police.TJ then wen't,to work for the.City of. Apache. Junction and retired 'afte'r 24 years of service.Working for the library has been a different experience.TJ has helped to keep peace among the teens and kids in the library.Over the summer there have been a variety of thefts throughout the library, including bike thefts and materials like cds and dvds.TJ has been with City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 2. Review of the Library Budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2009/10. 3. Update from Youth services Department on Library Summer programs. 4. Reminder of terms due. to expire. the L'ibrary for:2,5.Yea'rs and reall njoys.'working;,here. Spencer discussed the budget and the cuts that have been made within the department. Charts were provided to show the increases from 07/08 to 08/09 and the great decrease for 09/10. Tracie Compton talked about the success of the summer reading program.There were 1,859 kids who signed up for summer reading.There were 863 kids who completed the program.This was a 9% increase from last year even with the bad economy.There were 405 teens registered for the summer reading program. Out of that number there were 200 who completed the program.There were many great events including several teen game nights and a karaoke music challenge. Prizes consisted of fun toys, candy bars, restaurant coupons and movie tickets.A $50 Walmart gift card was given to the winner.All prizes were funded by the Friends of the Library. Terms are due to expire for Loretta Nielsen and Jon Lokensgard. If these Board members are interested in being reappointed please City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 5. SB 1421. provide a short letter in writing to indicate interest and return it to Spencer or Sancie at the Board Members' earliest convenience. Spencer read an email message from Denise Keller, Pinal County Library Director updating the Board on the status of SB 1421.Libraries are no longer included as part of this.legislation. J.
