Call to Order A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held February 9, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. B. Roll Call Present Dr. Jon Lokensgard Rhonda Jackson Drew Rappleye Theresa Nesser Loretta Nielsen Robert Mayo Absent Randy Mullen Staff: Spencer Paden, Library Manager Sancie Lee -Brown, Administrative Assistant C. Acceptance of Agenda: D. Acceptance of Minutes for November 10, 2011 Regular Meeting. The question of accepting the agenda for the February 9, 2012, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Robert Mayo made a motion to accept the agenda. Dr. Jon Lokensgard seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. Call to the Public: F. Correspondence and Communications: 1. Library plans for the Arizona Centennial. 2. Volunteer Appreciation Ice Cream Social. G. Librarian's Report: 1. Library's trial use of new social media, Google +. 2. Update on grant funded trial netbook deploy- ment. motion. All members present were in favor. None. Tracie Curtis discussed the upcoming celebration for Arizona.Our Friends of the Library will be contributing and serving cake for the event which will take place on February 14th from lpm - 4pm. Tracie Curtis discussed the upcoming Ice Cream Social to thank all of our Library Volunteers. It will take place February 29th at 2:00pm. Megan discussed Google+. Google+ is a social networking site similar to Facebook for individuals and non-profit organizations. It also serves as a way to log in to all Google services such as YouTube, Google Voice, Google Docs, etc. and allows the library to promote events and share links or photos and videos. Spencer discussed netbooks. Currently, we have had 10 netbooks available for 3. Pinal County Diaper Drive. checkout for 7 days.They are non-renewable and we have circulated these 33 times in the past month. We will soon deploy the remaining 34 netbooks until they are all in circulation. First Things First will be sponsoring a Diaper Drive on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Promenade Mall in Casa Grande. Kendra Porter from the First Things First Fun Van staff will be collecting Diapers here at the library for this event. 4. Library "Snapshot" day. One Day in the Life of Arizona Libraries.On January 24th, 2012 the Library participated in Library "Snapshot" day. This event provided a way for libraries of all types to show what happens in a single day in their libraries. Spencer prepared a summary of the events of that day for City Manager, George Hoffman who later read it at the Council meeting.Statistics showed how vital our library is in one day.Total visits on this day were 1,829. Circulations totaled 1,404 for books and audio -video materials topped the chart at 1,643 circulations. In addition, computer use showed 804 users this day.A short survey was handed out as part of the event.Out of 127 comments, almost all were very positive. 5. Update on BTOP II Grant. 6.Service Level Objectives. Spencer discussed the BTOP II Grant that was provided through the state.This grant is providing equipment to be specifically used for job seekers.We hope to receive desktop computers, scanners and a multifunction printer. Spencer discussed the 2012/13 Service Level Objectives. They are as follows: 1.Record Library video segments to be shown on the web or on cable. 2.Host interactive activities for all ages including a family game night. 3.Create programming and a website for children and adults promoting financial literacy. 4.Partner with other organizations to provide internships within the Library. 5.Make the Library's presence known by promoting the Library through the use of social media including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Old Business None. I.New Business: 1. Meet Library staff Member(s) or Library VIP's.Meet Tom Baxter. He is working as part of the Healthy, Wealthy, Wise Grant. Tom has a Business Degree from Arizona State University and a Master's Degree from Thunderbird. His past work has included McDonald Douglas and non-profit work.Tom has spent time overseas in Africa and also owned his own manufacturing company for 10 years.He has prepared several programs for the grant including a successful piggy bank reading series that included over 300 child registrations.He also provides one on one budget coaching offered each Tuesday. Tom assists in teaching about credit scores, budgeting and finances. Tom is also willing to go to events outside the city for presentations and/or classes. Tom also serves as the Small Business Development representative for Pinal County. 2. Library e -book/ e -audio visual Initiatives.Craig Smith provided a demonstration on how to download and read kindle books on your computer in addition to the use of the Overdrive product (Greater Phoenix Digital Library). J. Requests for future agenda Items.A Board member would like to discuss having a meeting each month. K. Adjournment: A Board member would like to discuss reviewing again the possibility of changing the time of the Board meetings from 6:30 to 6:00pm. Meeting adjourned at 7:57 p.m.
