Call to Order A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held August 9, 2012, at 6:35 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. B. Roll Call Present Robert Mayo Randy Mullen Theresa Nesser Drew Rappleye Absent Rhonda Jackson Loretta Nielsen Dr. Jon Lokensgard Staff: Spencer Paden, Library Director Karen Rauls, Circulation Supervisor Jessie Schroeder, Library Page C. Acceptance of Agenda: D. Acceptance of Minutes for June 14, 2012 Regular Meeting and the June 28, 2012 Special Meeting. The question of accepting the agenda for the August 9, 2012, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Randy Mullen made a motion to accept the agenda. Drew Rappleye seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. The question of accepting the minutes for the June 14, 2012, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Robert Mayo made a motion to accept the minutes. Librarian's Report: All members present were in favor.The question of accepting the minutes for the June 28, 2012 Special Meeting was placed before the Board. Randy Mullen made a motion to accept the minutes.Robert Mayo seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. None. None. 1. Circulating Kindle Touch e -readers.Spencer provided instruction sheets and passed around an actual Kindle e- reader to the Board members. The library will begin an e- reader checkout program to the public.The service will remain unadvertised (except within the library) so that the staff has time to work out any issues while the program is small. The Greater Phoenix Digital Library can also be used with the Kindle Touch. 2.Pinal County Library children's touchscreen workstations.Spencer provided information about these new workstations.They will be located along the right side of the wall when 'entering the children's area. 3.Family Courtyard netting installed.Spencer discussed the challenges that were occurring in the courtyard City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 due to the mess from pigeons. Netting was installed to prevent further issues. 4. Grant updates.First Things First has been approved for a third year at $208,000.The BTOP II grant and TLC (Teaching Literacy through Childcare) grant were also discussed. 5.Library programs.The children's summer reading program registered 2,277 with 684 completing the program. Each child earned a book upon completion.Books were purchased by Friends of the Library.Children's events included; Babytime, Family storytime, Monday movies, Tales with Miss Alana, KinderPrep (provided by a Boeing grant), Craig Davis the magician/juggler with 167 attending, Bobby Freeman, organist for the Diamondbacks with 135 attendees, Michael Steele, the Yo -Yo performer with 182 attendees, Harry Potter fan fest with 262 attending and Ronald McDonald with 136 attending. The Teen Summer reading program totaled 228,958 minutes of reading from teens who logged their minutes online.Total participants were 179.Total completions were 97.Prizes were provided by Friends of the Library, Harkins, Papa Murphy's, Sonic, Burger King, City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 Harley Davidson, Subway and Los Gringos. H. Old Business None. I. New Business: 1. Meet Library staff Member(s) or Library VIP's.1. Meet Jessie Schroeder. Jessie volunteered in 2007 for three years and was also part of the Teen Advisory Board. In November of 2011 Jessie was hired as a part- time library page.Jessie has a variety of duties including shelving materials, working at the call center and also assisting patrons at the service desk. 2. Library Budget update For 2012/13.The final budget was approved on August 7, 2012. 3. Pinal County Library District Polaris upgrade.August 3-9, 2012 Central Arizona College (CAC) was added to the Pinal County Library District's system. Apache Junction Public Library is also a member. The District is working on a courier connection so that we can easily borrow books from CAC and vice versa. 4. Discussion on having a notary public on staff in the Library.Tess Nesser had mentioned the idea of a notary public as being a part of the library staff.Spencer discussed City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 5 that if this were to happen the service would be offered to everyone equally.In addition, it is the City's policy not to charge for the service.Spencer will ask the current staff if there is interest in becoming a notary.
