Call to Order A regular meeting of The Board of Trustees of Apache Junction Public Library was held October 11, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at the Apache Junction Library pursuant to notice as prescribed by law. B. Roll Call Present Dr. Jon Lokensgard Robert Mayo Randy Mullen Theresa Nesser Absent Rhonda Jackson Loretta Nielsen Drew Rappleye Staff: Spencer Paden, Library Director Sancie Lee -Brown, Administrative Assistant C. Acceptance of Agenda:The question of accepting the agenda for the October 11, 2012, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Dr. Jon Lokensgard made a motion to accept the agenda. Theresa Nesser seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. D. Acceptance of Minutes for September 13, 2012 Regular Meeting.The question of accepting the minutes for the September 13, 2012, regular Meeting was placed before the Board. Theresa Nesser made a motion to accept the minutes. Dr. Jon Lokensgard seconded the motion. All members present were in favor. City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 E. Call to the Public: F. Correspondence and Communications: G. Librarian's Report: None. Spencer read the resignation letter of Dr. Jon Lokensgard. The name of the newest Library Board member is Todd Cousins. Spencer handed out information received from Pat Brenner regarding Home Rule. There were no questions regarding the monthly report. Karen Rauls reported on recent teen and tween events. Girl Scout Kailin Knox, working on her Gold Award has sponsored a Lego/Duplo drive for the Library and was able to raise over $1,400.00 in funds in addition to purchasing over 30,000 Legos for the library. The Library will be doing a Lego program every other month. Recent teen events included a Hunger Games, Live Candyland game, Rockband, Guitar Hero, Dance Central and Library Olympics. In October there will be a teen costume party and pumpkin decorating event.On October 27 th there will be two events for children, a Tricky Treat Scavenger hunt and a Harry Potter event. Tracie Curtis discussed adult and children's programs.There were computer classes, Fun Van by First Things First every Tuesday and Friday, Library City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 Bingo, book clubs like mystery and novel reads, movies every Thursday at 1:30 pm and 5:30pm and this month is banned book month.In addition, there is crocheting each Saturday and Ms. Alana reads books in the cozy book area as well as County Supervisor Clark Smithson, aka Superman. H. Old Business 1.Update on having a notary public on staff in the library.Although Tracie Curtis has expressed interest in becoming a notary public, no other staff person has expressed an interest. Spencer would like to hold off exploring the topic further until more staff is hired.We will keep this topic on the back burner for now. 2.Update on the Teaching Literacy to Children (TLC) Grant I. New Business: 3.Discussion on public art in the Library. The TLC center has served a couple of families so far. TLC is open from 1:00pm - 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Tess Nesser wanted to discuss this item.Tess is a member of the Superstition Arts and Cultural Alliance(SACA). She was interested in displaying public art in the Library. We are now part of the already existing program put on by City of Apache Junction Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 4 4.Meet Library staff member(s) or Library VIP's. the City.We will be getting special hangers for hanging the art in the Library. Areas for display have been identified. Meet Paul Schuldt.Paul works part-time as an instructor in a State sponsored grant program here at the Library and part-time as a Library Page.As part of the grant he has a mobile lab that he takes out in the community to teach classes. He also teaches computer classes in the Library each Friday and Saturday. Paul helps to organize the collection and works at the call center and service desk.
