1. 22-210 Library Strategic Planning focus group session with moderator Toni Garvey of
Garvey Library Consulting.
Toni Garvey of Garvey Library Consulting provided a Powerpoint presentation discussing
common elements of a 21st century library followed by a question and answer session for the
library board. The focus group question and answer session is summarized as follows:
Question: How would you describe the Apache Junction Community?Answer:A giving and
supportive community; there are lots of activities available; close to the mountains and close to
the city but in a more rural setting; two(2)seasons(winter visitor season/non winter visitor
season); there are not as many opportunities offered during the summer as there are during the
winter season. Question: What are the major issues facing people in Apache Junction?Answer:
Homelessness; making decisions on the type of jobs and schools available; home prices on the
rise; growth and how it will affect the infrastructure in the community; transportation issues; not
enough technical trades in the community; not enough big businesses here to support families.
Question: What do you use the Library for? Everything; the library satisfies all of my needs;
technical training on the computer to keep current; the Friends of the Library book area; the new
books list; digital online resources like Hoopla. Question: What do you like especially about the
library?The free programming offered; to use the library as a third place and a quiet, open area;
the family interaction. Question: Is there anything that frustrates you when you use the library?
Answer: The need for more seating, there is a lack of space; half empty shelves; Question:
What are the major challenges facing the library today and moving forward?Answer:
Communication; with no local newspaper it makes it difficult to notify the community of what is
going on at the library; are digital/physical materials providing incentive for patrons to continue to
come in to the library or will the library possibly need to reinvent itself in the way patrons interact
with each other around materials?How to best utilize the library budget. Question: How can the
library better serve you?More variety of Spanish language materials; more cultural activities to
bring people in; programs for the working class after regular business hours; recording virtual
programs or programs in general as an option to patrons and offering question and answer
sessions after an event. Question: In a year, what would you like to say that the library is doing
differently?What change would you like to see?Answer: Pre-pandemic numbers; better
communication and a local newspaper to advertise library events.
2. 22-211 Discussion and possible vote to change meeting time for future library board
meetings.
Director Harrison wanted to provide an opportunity to boardmembers to change the time for
future board meetings if interested. Boardmembers seemed satisfied with the current time of
the board meetings and will not be making a change at this time.
3. 22-214 Setting of date and time in June for special board meeting to discuss and
