2. 22-363 Update and possible discussion on the library strategic planning process.
Director Harrison discussed that the strategic planning process is still ongoing. The planning
committee has reviewed public and staff surveys and focus group sessions. Goals have been
identified and are as follows: Goal 1 - Connect the Apache Junction community at the library and
beyond. Goal 2 -Communicate efficiently, effectively, and accurately with patrons and staff.
Goal 3 - Library resources and services will reflect the wants and needs of the community. Goal
4- Uphold high standard for spaces that are welcoming, comfortable, well maintained and
valued by the community. Discussions on actions and plans to fullfill the strategies are
forthcoming.
3. 22-366 Announcement of 2022 LSTA subgrant and express grant awards.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is an independent federal agency that
provides grants to state library administrative agencies, including the Arizona State Library
Archives and Public Records. The IMLS issues grants to libraries using a population based
formula to set certain standards. They provide funding to support libraries across the nation
through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) administered through each state
library. Every year the Arizona State Library has a grant process built around a five year plan
that details the different service goals. They invite Arizona libraries to apply to meet those
different goals. In May we applied for one of the grants. We were awarded an LSTA grant in the
amount of$30,423.00 for the Apache Junction Public Library Bookmobile Renovation to
enhance our traveling library and technology services. Our current bookmobile has shelving that
is about 10 years old. The shelving is library shelving but not specifically bookmobile shelving.
We will be renovating inside the bookmobile with shelving conducive to travel. Our goal is to
provide equitable services to older adults, children and non-users. We will also be adding
technology stations.
We also received a teen connections internship express grant in the amount of$3500. This
grant will support career and college readiness through a connected learning library internship
for one teenager(age 16-17) in February 2023. They will have to go through the application
process as a regular applicant would. Stephanie Greene from the youth department will be the
library mentor. The intern will choose a community based learning project that they are
interested in and work in the library from April through July 2023. This intern program will provide
a head start for future resume and college applications.
4. 22-365 Discussion and possible plan on how to best communicate library events to
the public.
A library board member has requested this topic for discussion. The library
director will provide a brief summary of what is currently being done to
communicate events to the public. A discussion opportunity for board
members will follow.
Director Harrison discussed current library service promotions at the library in addition to
collaborations with Parks and Recreation. Boardmember Walters suggested adding a kiosk at
the multi-generational center to allow viewing of library events. Vice-President Hall suggested
adding QR codes. Director Harrison indicated that we have a QR code for the programs

newsletter but she will look into adding a OR code to the paper calendar. Other places a OR
code could be useful may be at the self checkout, outside some of the big rooms that get a lot of
traffic, the kids reading area and where research computers are located. Boardmember
Walters suggested having the staff picks condensed and the calendar added at the bottom of
the page of the Superstition Living Magazine. Boardmember Rajski mentioned that her school
uses "Nextdoor and "ClassDojo" for announcements to parents and will check to see if the
school allows announcements from outside sources. She also mentioned that the business
"Ring" has a community page where you can make announcements if you have the doorbell
service. Vice President Hall inquired if the library is thinking about using the website to ask
library users questions on a regular basis (maybe a single question per month) to gather data
on a topic. She went on to say that it is critical for people to continue to give feedback and know
that their feedback is actually heard. She suggested letting patrons know what the library has
done as a result of gathering survey responses in addition to sharing some of those responses
with the public. She also suggested possibly connecting with realtors in the area and finding out
how they communicate to the public. Director Harrison will research how to acquire a list of new
people moving into neighborhoods. Vice President Hall also mentioned that a OR code could
work to request experience from the patron as a new user. Patrons can use a OR code that will
take them to a website where they can fill out 1 or 2 questions.
F. Adjournment
President Krause adjourned the meeting at 7:43pm
