Subject: RE Question about agenda
Jeff,
No, I will not be present tonight.
If not too late, I would ask that a statement be read by the chair. I have pasted it below.
************************
I regret that I was unable to attend tonight's meeting of the Apache Junction Parks and
Recreation Commission, however, I would like to make a statement to the commission regarding
the establishment of a non-profit organization.
Our community is presently at a potentially momentous point in history. It is more important
now than ever that we address the current status of our downtown.
Out of recent meetings, one theme seems to dominate with regard to the redevelopment of the
Grand Hotel site. This theme relates to the possible establishment of an arts and
entertainment district.
While we have the option to recommend to council that a non-profit agency be established
solely to benefit our commission's interests, I urge us to demonstrate a leadership role
through the recommendation that a non-profit organization of broad scope be established.
I envision a flexible, all-encompassing organization, call it the Apache Junction Foundation
for arguments sake, which if possible to establish, would address the needs of today's Apache
Junction like dog parks and trail development while allowing for relatively effortless
adoption of future projects yet to be identified Notable among these future projects might
be infrastructure related to the potential development of an arts and entertainment district.
Such an all-encompassing organization might also simplify coordination between city
government and the single non-profit group rather than council working with a multitude of
groups. Additionally, the board of a single organization might provide a degree of focus on
fund raising initiatives, whereas a multitude of organizations may overwhelm the generosity
of our citizens. I would rather that we meet the fund raising goals of a couple targeted
projects during a given time period than see dozens of potentially large projects receiving
small donations that are ineffective in reaching their financial goals.
Again, I apologize for my absence, but I do ask that the commission consider the long-term
benefits this all-encompassing option may provide to our community.
Todd Olear
Apache Junction Park and Recreation Commissioner

Sorry I'm missing the meeting. If I could have scheduled this engagement I would have timed
it differently but sometimes work does get in the way of other things. (Fortunately my
'" employer is understanding about life interfering with work' )
Do you know if Roger was going to attend tonight's meeting?
See you later,
