FROM: '',CHUCK NEWCOMER, DIRECTOR OF PLANNING
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR AGENDA ITEM - FEBRUARY 19, 1985
PRESENTATION TO CITY OF BLM LEASE FOR OPEN SPACE/
EQUESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM BY BLM OFFICIALS
To promote some positive publicity for the Bureau of Land Management
and the City in regards to our lease agreement for the "Open Space/
Equestrian Trail System," BLM has requested that time (5 minutes) be
made available at the February 19th City Council meeting for official
presentation of the executed lease to the City.
As of this writing, it is not firm as to who will be representing the
Bureau of Land Management, but it will probably be an official of the
Regional or State Manager stature.
BLM will be sending press releases to the local papers.

BLM TO PRESENT APACHE JUNCTION CITY COUNCIL
WITH RECREATION LEASE ON 1,628 ACRES
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will present the Apache Junction
city council a no-fee lease on 1,628 acres of public land February 19 so
the city can develop horse, Jogging, and hiking trails.
The L-shaped tract extends nine miles, roughly paralleling the Salt
River Project powerline corridors east and north of the Pinal County town.
Arthur E. Tower, BLM Phoenix Resource Area manager, said the lease
calls for the city to acquire ownership of the land, also at no cost, when
development plans are complete
He said these plans call for three trailheads of less than five
acres each with graveled parking areas and loading and unloading areas for
horses. Signs marking hiking and riding trails are also planned.
Tower said the city's management of the area will benefit the
Sonoran Desert environment because motorized vehicles will be prohibited,
thus reducing soil erosion, noise, and dust pollution.
The BLM official said the city's proposed 11 miles of trails will
eventually interconnect with existing trails in nearby Lost Dutchman
State Park and the Superstition Wilderness Area.
The leased area is one-quarter mile wide The north-south segment
is five miles long and extends from Silly Mountain on the south to the
Apache Trail (Arizona 88) on the north. The east-west segment is four
miles long and stretches from the Apache Trail to North Meridian Road
