MEMORANDUM
DATE: November 5, 2012
TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council
THROUGH George Hoffman, City Manager
FROM: Bryant Powell, Assistant City Manager
SUBJECT. Proposed Renovations to the Apache Junction Police Department Facility
REQUEST
Staff respectfully requests city council discuss the new proposed renovations to the Apache
Junction Police Department which now only requires an interior remodel
BACKGROUND
The police department has adjusted plans for a building expansion that would have included
adding on to the existing building's exterior, to move forward with an interior remodel only
Two main factors have influenced this move. The first was the desire on the part of city
leadership to use a pay as you go approach instead of incurring debt. The second was the
offering from the City Court of$140,000 00 to use towards the remodeling of the jail/briefing
room at the police department. With these funds, and the current impact fees available (will
cover approximately 50%of the cost), plus a contribution from RICO of about $50,000 00, we
will be in a position to remodel our interior and create the same improvements in the jail,
patrol briefing, evidence processing and Emergency Operation Center capabilities that we were
going to realize with the expansion.
We can now move forward on this having the funds in place, keeping with the Mayor and
Council's desire to pay as we go The areas mentioned will see various enhancements,
including updated technology, safer appearances for the judge and victims when they hold
initial appearances in our jail with suspects, and an overall professional, organized environment
for the patrol staff to work in and around
Thank you for your consideration
