What percentage of abused individuals are abused again in the
next year
Re-victimization and re-abuse rates vary significantly depending on the type of
abuse, the population studied, and the timeframe measured. For survivors of
domestic violence, approximately 50% report a recurrence of abuse within 12
months.
The following data provides a breakdown of re-abuse rates across different
categories:
Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence
• One-Year Recurrence: Approximately half of domestic violence survivors
report re-occurrence within 12 months.
• Offender Re-arrests: In a study of abusers placed on probation for
misdemeanor domestic violence, over 38% were arrested for a new domestic
violence offense within two years.
• Impact of Criminal History: If an abuser has one prior arrest, the chance of
re-abusing the same victim rises to 25%; if they have five to six prior arrests,
the chance rises to 50%.
• Historical Victimization: Most female victims of intimate partner violence
have been previously victimized by the same offender, with rates reaching
77% for women aged 18-24 and 81% for those aged 35-49. 61
